Exhaust gas temp sensor

Off side failure, been told its a engine out job due to the valve breaking inside the exhaust... is this the case, i've had plenty of work done by this specialist in south Yorkshire and trust there judgement but is there anything else that can be done before works stats i.e mapp it out maybe....

I'm not familiar with the 405 architecture but I assume removing the exhaust is somewhat easier than removing the engine, especially if the sensor is in the exhaust, why the engine removal?
