Turbo cut in point

I'm just about to get my RR (Whopee Razz Razz Razz ). It's a 2010MY TDV8 Vogue. At what engine speed does the turo cut in?
Presumably if I drive at just below that level on long M-way journeys it will reduce diesel consumption Question

As Scarey says, forget worrying about MPG. If you are doing a long long haul then sit back and enoy the car's comfort, set the cruise at 70 and let it pur along at 1850rpm and it should settle down on the average mpg setting at somewhere in the region of 29-30mpg, a bit less if there are a few hills to climb, a lot better if it is flat lands you are driving. Just don't try to drive it like a GTi, then you will get low to mid 20's - leave GTI driving to the Saxo boys. 2018 Mini Countryman Cooper S E All4 PHEV in Melting Silver - it’s whisper quiet in EV and polluter modes

My question wasn't purely about fuel use. I seem to remember many years ago when I had an Isuzu Trooper which was turbocharged. When accelerating it made a pleasing noise as the turbo cut in and you seemed to feel the extra push. Since then I've driven diesel Beemers so have forgotten all this turbo stuff.

Can't wait to pick it up Thumbs Up Thumbs Up

It's a miss conception amongst drivers that boost is bad for fuel consumption. The reality is that without boost engines have to rev harder, and more of the fuel they burn is used to turn the engine than develop power.

In the 80's Ayrton Senna's fuel consumption was higher than Alain Prosts because he thought it was better to have higher revs and lower boost. The Honda engineers told him otherwise and he altered his driving.

In the battle of Britain pilots used to reduce the boost of their superchargers as they thought it would save more fuel than reducing revs. But the power of a Merlin engine at 3000rpm would be absorbed by the engine, supercharger and propellor at roughly 20%, 10% and 70% respectively. At 2000rpm that's 10%, 5% and 85%. Subsequently the RAF printed leaflets with the rather quaint 'Reduce the revs and boost the boost, you'll have enough petrol to get home to roost'.

If you look at the latest 4.4, it has quite a small turbo for its size, and 8 quite long gears. The idea is to get boost at very low revs so the engine can turn slowly but still develop enough torque to work. At higher revs it has another turbo to provide boost at bigger volumes.

So the answer, is let the engine slog in a lowish gear with the turbo going at full pelt.

...if you can in an automatic.
