Has anyone any experience with replacing a typically failed steering rack on a L405 with a used steering rack from another L405 and solved the coding issue, or know of somewhere in the UK that can assist.

I've got this problem right now.

My coding expert has tried to recode a used motor and module on my old rack and LR have told him:
1. That the module needs to new/wiped before and can't just be recoded
2. That the module and motor is also coded to the rack itself and cannot be treated as a separate component (I don't understand how an electrical component can be 'coded' to a mechanical component but hey ho)
3. LR's solution is to buy a new module at £2.5k + VAT

So I'm going to remove the original rack and sent it together with the original motor/module to be reconditioned for £900 and hope this solves the problem.

Please keep us updated and a link to the company you are using would be good...

What went wrong with rack in the first place ? V8 or else ...

Seen a few now with snapped bolts holding the motor to the rack...

I’m in the same boat ,hoping that Patrick from gap tool will be able to help he did say tho they can be tricky to do

The power steering just stopped working - quite an interesting experience when you're haring down the fast lane of a motorway...

At first steering could be reset after restarting the car but this only stopped working after a couple of days. The dash initially indicated a fault but then even the warning messages disappeared.

My local maintenance guy said that the steering module had stopped communicating.

A used replacement motor and module re-established communication but couldn't be coded to the car. I consulted two coding specialists who confirmed that this was the case.

Rack and motor c/w. module now being sent to Western Power Steering in Bristol for reconditioning which includes re-setting the module so that it can be re-coded to the car.

Seems bonkers to lock down a steering rack setup to be car specific. V8 or else ...

That looks fixable though. The racks unbolt and you can replace the belts.

I managed to extract a sheared bolt from my beemer which has a similar setup and replaced with steel bolts. V8 or else ...

It is very interesting what JLR is doing to it components. I had no case with rack but I had some issues in the past with different modules. I'm doing it on my own risk and understand that this could be a problem that costs a lot of money after.
But internal mirrors can't be flashing with different software, as well as the parking aid system, as well as the BCM module. All of them locked off and did not respond anymore if you were trying to do something with software.
But what is intriguing is that someone can reset the module. That means that not only them can do it. Some of the guys just don't want to do the things they never done. And as I said it can costs a lot to replace damaged module.
Just let us know if you can sort the things out.

So Western Power Steering found that they couldn't repair the module on my rack - it was totally unresponsive but offered me a replacement reconditioned rack for an additional £550 which I agreed to.

The new rack arrived 2 working days later and worked perfectly out of the box. Good service (if somewhat poor communications). They seem to know what they're doing and deliver what it says on the can.

Still a hell of a lot cheaper than going to JLR.

FYI, time to remove rack 1hr 15m (on jack stands). Time to replace (with greater care) 2 hrs. (In case you want to price the job at your local supplier - it would be quicker if the car was on a lift).
