Ireland 2008 Range Rover Vogue TDV8 Stornoway Grey
High Idle Solved

Hi all,

I am working through various issues with my new to me 3,6TDV8.
First problem was a serious battery drain, turned out to be fuse 12 feeding the AC control panel, replaced the panel and its solved.

Second one was a high idle. Most of the time it idled at 900-1000rpm whether cold or warm engine. Occasionally the idle would drop to around 750 rpm which is where I believe it should be.

My thinking was that it could be due to a throttle body not closing fully due to dirt, or a faulty air intake temperature (AIT)sensor.

To test out the faulty AIT sensor I switched the MAF sensors over as the AIT sensor is part of the MAF and the signal is only taken from one of the MAF sensors. Switched them over and no change.

While scratching my head I looked at live data from my scantool for the Engine ECM and noted that it thought the Ambient air temp was -40 Deg C.
There also has never been a outside/ambient air temp (AAT)reading on the dash, its just blank. So I took off the grille and found the AAT sensor clipped to the back of the Landrover badge.
Looked a bit further and found one of the wires to the AAT was broken. Got out the shrink wrap and soldering Iron and fixed the break

Started the engine and the AAT reading appears on the dash and hey presto the idle was normal, around 750 to 800 rpm.
I did not think that the ECM used any input from this sensor to set the idle speed, but it must do..

So great that another problem solved so simply!! All the best

Well done Chris, good bit of detective work Sir.

Just goes to prove that a scan tool is an invaluable bit of kit to have, providing you have a reasonable understanding of what it’s telling you.
