Up until about four years ago a group of us used to go for an annual mid-May golf tour to Vilamoura. We stopped going when the quality of the local courses fell away a bit, at the same time as everything got more expensive. I'm not in a position to comment on it as a holiday destination though. We went to Penina (also on the Algarve) this year, and though better value than Vilamoura, you'd have to query the cost of eating out and drinking. The Portugese plan for getting out of recession would appear to be "let the tourists pay". As a result, it wasn't exactly busy, which actually suited us.

yes i've been there a few times, there is lots of good places to eat around the marina and its not full of young clubbers. The place is clean and tidy also the weather is good most of the year
