Front heater

Hi All,

The front heater fan has stopped working on my 2012 l322.

I dont have an obd tool yet so unsure if I have any error codes. I have just replaced the final stage resistor as I know these are a know fault, with a new genuine one. This does not appear to have solved the issue so I am assuming it’s the fan motor itself.

Before I go down that route, I wanted to know from anyone who has fitted a new resistor before, did you need to clear any fault codes before the new one works or should it just work straight away?

Just trying to rule out error code clearing before I move onto fan diagnosis.

Cheers

Daz

Northern Ireland 2012 Range Rover Westminster TDV8 Stornoway Grey

My 2012 Westminster was booked in this week for what I thought was a fan motor which was whining. Garage diagnosed a stepper motor which apparently is the dash dismantling job. So parts ordered and it is booked in again.
Apparently LR don't have parts in stock any longer but BMW part is the same from that generation.

Cheers,

That’s worth knowing. Thank you 👍

Did you ever fit a new resistor yourself first?

Really would like to know if I have to reset any error codes for it to take effect before taking to a garage for further diagnosis

Cheers

It won't necessarily produce an error code, only if the fan is giving high resistance.

It is most likely however - they're an inexpensive part that's clocked up as many hours as the engine has, with no servicing in that time.

The solution is a new fan, which is around £80.

However, to get to it and replace it is an all-day job, so if you can't do it yourself, expect a very large bill. T&S Norman or Glenrands are the Go-To for this job garage wise - they know what to do and will do it in half the time as any garage attempting it first or second time.

Here's the How To, so you know what's involved:

The final stage resistor can be accessed from the right footwell - you only need to remove the side and upper trim panels to get to it. That's easily tackled at home. 2015 Range Rover Autobiography 4.4 SDV8

Thanks Gary,

Yes just fitted a new resistor and that hasn’t fixed it. Bad times.

I won’t be doing it myself so will need to take it to a garage.

I will bear in mind those that you mention.

Thank you.
