2011 4.4 TDV8 Rod Knock

Hello everyone,

As a long term BMW and Porsche man I have decided to move over to a Rangey (god help my wallet). After much research I decided on a facelift 4.4 TDV8. I wanted a bit of a project so found one in the spec I want which was quite cheap, for now.

2011 110 000 miles. Black interior which has virtually no wear at all!

Seller stated there were injector issues he couldn’t get to the bottom of. Ive just had it delivered and I already love it despite just moving it around my drive.

Now for the problem. The car develops a knock as it gets warm from the left side of the engine. I have removed the oil filter and can’t see any glitter. (Once I get a new one I’ll cut it open to confirm). I have disconnected each injector to check for a change, no change. That’s all I’ve done for tonight. Once I get it in the garage I’ll dive deeper.

Is rod knock common on these cars? I find it hard to believe as it has such low mileage and appears to have had good history. No error codes either. I’m not opposed to rebuilding the engine as I did want a project but it does seem awfully rare or unlucky.

I have ordered a proper diagnostic tool to dive deeper. I have a video I could upload if that helps.

If I do have to go down this route has anyone else done one of these engines? Best place for parts?

Oh it would seem i've bitten off more than I can chew with this particular engine.

I've been looking around at all the manuals and I can't find any bearing clearance specifications nor torque settings. After calling around various shops it seems that the 4.4TDV8 is not a rebuildable engine or at least the specialists don't do that.

So I'm going to drop the oil pan and confirm if this is indeed knock and then hunt for a new engine. I've added a link here to a video of the sound.

I would try removing the serpentine belt and then running it to see if the noise is still there.

I agree. It looks like the sound is almost coming from that smaller second pulley you can see spinning in the video. That pulley looks like its rotating in time with the sound ... the larger pulley ( I presume the crank pulley ) doesn't look in time with the sound.

Alrighty, what an ordeal. Had to order a couple of tools but I have managed to whip off the belt and started it up for a bit. Same situation, quiet and smooth at first, then the knock starts coming.

You can see in the video that the noise goes away then comes back which is strange. This is after i'd ran it for a minute already. Very apparent when revving but seems to come and go which is odd.

Looks like I'll be looking for a crashed one at this point.

Thoughts?

Left side when you're in the car or standing infront of the car?
I had a noisy injector pump. I put some good quality injector cleaner in that cured my noise.
My noise started after a couple of minutes idleing.

Alrighty so put everything back together. Did the whole bleeding process etc. checked the oil filter again and I could definitely see some glitter. I reckon the engine is toast and a rod is very unhappy. Now to decide whether this is the parts car or donor car.

Yep, that noise is very familiar. Sounds like it is coming from the top left ton of the engine but, in reality, it's the rods screwing up the crankshaft.

Worth looking to see if you can source a second hand crank and rods as they can be rebuilt.

Do you know what the clearance specs are and tightening sequence for bearings?

The car still starts up quietly so hopefully the crank isn’t too damaged and I could have it cleaned up.

I called LR today and a new engine is £14500. So I’m on the lookout for another TDV8 Vogue SE or Westminster while I figure out how to tackle the current lump. It’d be a such a shame to use it for parts only.

Any breakers yards or places to suggest me buying a crashed one?

OP - where in cornwall are you? - I'm pretty sure there was a 4.4tdv8 near me that needed work (not engine) on the cheap...I'm up on the moors near Minions etc. I can see if I can find out where it was if needed... Neil. 2010 L322 Autobiography Black Edition

I've seen bottom end rebuild kits around using new parts for under £3k if you have the means to do the work yourself.

This guys got a new short 4.4 motor for 9k

Or an example of a full engine recon including fitting for £6k

So there are lumps out there, but still, something to choke on having glitter in the oil, damn unlucky on a 4.4 deisel, maybe had a por maintenance history stretching the servicing being run on a budget

I am based in Falmouth but happy to travel/ have delivered. If you could link me to that one that would be awesome.

Happy to do the work myself, might have to buy a running one in the meantime as a run around and keep the other as a longer term project. I'll check on those kits to see if they have their own clearance and tightening specs.

It is very strange, the car is in pretty good shape cosmetically which is why I thought it was semi looked after but who knows. I'm not a fan of these long interval services the manufacturers all push. I think i'll stay away from the recon engines and rather get a whole crashed car if I can, seems better value wise but I'll continue hunting around for torque specs and clearance. I might just plastigauge the other bearings for clearance provided they are okay and dig around for torque from various engine builders.

Still struggling to wrap my head around a non-rebuildable engine. I mean its nice when its in warranty to have a new one but otherwise not a lot of sense. Audi actually rebuilt my RS5 engine vs replacing it many years ago
