L405 insurance in London fyi

In case anyone is tracking the price of insurance, my car has gone from £1000 a year originally to £1700 last year to £3500 this year. I am currently with Direct Line. Best price I can get elsewhere is £5800. Go Compare, Land Rover, Admiral will not quote. I am in 50s, have full no claims, no convictions, zone 3 London, park on street, 6000 miles a year. Direct Line have no additional security requirements (like secondary immobiliser) so no movement on price. £3500 it is then! Nice.

For fun I checked some other cars.... L460 AB PHEV £2200, Bentayga £6500, Porsche Cayenne Hybrid £1700, Citroen C4 £550. L405 P400e Autobiography (MY2020)... Silicon Silver / Espresso

I am beginning to wonder if insurance companies are hiring the right actuaries. But for low mileage drivers neither Range Rover nor hybrid makes any sense for the cost conscious.

Direct line refused to quote on my l405. They were by far the cheapest last year. Eventually went with Teco bank for a half reasonable quote. 2017 5.0 Autobiography Supercharged

I know LR have been promising solutions for a while and this article from 2 November indicates they are doing something for 2018 - 2022 vehicles but as an owner of a 2022 L405 I've heard nothing.

Jaguar Land Rover is racing to patch holes in the security of
thousands of its luxury Range Rover vehicles in an e>ort to
halt the crime wave stalking the cars.
The company is retroBtting a variety of Land Rover and
Jaguar models made between 2018 to 2022 with security Bxes
after thefts and insurance premiums skyrocketed.
Owners will be contacted and some may need to visit dealers
for updates.

Range Rovers were among the most-stolen cars in the UK last
year because of their high resale value and keyless
technology that criminals exploit.
Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) chief executive Adrian Mardell said:
“The theft record was much worse in 2022 than it is today.
“Engineers have been working on a signiBcant number of
interventions to counteract, avoid and get ahead of the ways
that vehicles can actually be taken.”
Thieves have been able to buy car hacking technology online
that allowed them to fool cars into unlocking and starting
without needing a key.

Devices claiming to be able to mimic the radio frequencies
used to control keyless cars have been blamed for an uptick in
theft for many car models.
Making the security codes used to control the cars harder to
crack is understood to have been central in preventing thefts.
Security has already been tightened for Range Rovers made
since January last year, chief executive Adrian Mardell said,
and the theft rate among those cars has been “incredibly low”.
JLR has been reluctant to describe the details of its security
updates given their sensitive nature.
Car makers have been tightening up their software in order to
close the loopholes. Vehicles receive regular updates
remotely over wireless internet as a matter of course.
JLR has worked with insurance industry bodies to help show
that the problem is being Bxed after premiums for owners
rose to thousands of pounds, particularly in urban areas like
London.


Telegraph analysis conducted last month found that just two
insurers were willing to cover a Range Rover Velar RDynamic in London.
Quotes for the cheapest annual premium – based on a 35-
year-old woman living in London with six years’ driving
experience and no claims – amounted to £22,515 on average.
In the year to March, one in every hundred Land Rovers on
the road was stolen and Range Rovers accounted for six of the
top 10 most-stolen car models overall. The Range Rover Velar
R`Dynamic was the most popular target.

Mr Mardell said: “We’re very conBdent that our vehicles
being purchased today are in a much more protected state
than they would have been two to three years ago.”
Security issues “will continue to get the focus that they’ve
had over the last 12 to 18 months going forward until we see
this trend actually being eradicated from society,” he said.
A JLR spokesman said: “JLR vehicles from 2022 onwards –
Range Rover, Range Rover Sport, Defender, Jaguar F`Pace –
are equipped with the latest security features and are proving
very resilient to theft.

“We are continuing to roll out a programme to enhance the
security of models from 2018 onwards and already tens of
thousands of eligible vehicles have received software updates
via their retailer, to provide the latest vehicle security.
“We will be contacting more clients directly about this issue

For a giggle I looked at third party only quotes on the fatty. £8000. A sure sign the market is completely broken? I mean if fully comp on a Lamborghini for me is a grand how can this be? Answers on a blank check. L405 P400e Autobiography (MY2020)... Silicon Silver / Espresso

Jesus wept , am looking to come back to a fatty , in the last year insurance has rocketed. Just priced it for a 2019 AB , cheapest is £1200. Almost triple the cost since I got rid last year .

Mine, 2015 V8 S/C was £849 and I thought that was bad enough! Double the previous year Confused But my other 2 cars nearly doubled as well.

66 years old (me, not the car), full no claims, SW London, garaged, 8000 mpa.

I'm sure that I've read something about the security issues being on cars 2018 on, I might be wrong.

Martin Lewis covered this on his website. He suggested that insurance companies looked on people who insured their cars fully comp as being more likely to be of a mind set to do what they could to protect their vehicle.

A point of view and, I suppose, a bit in a similar vein to the comments on here about things like checking whether there are matching tyres etc on a propective purchase equating to a level of care. John

There is another problem for insurers over and above Land Rover thefts and that is electric vehicle claims which is why all premiums are rising.

The issue is that if and when there is any damage to an electric car which may have impacted the batteries in any way the insurance companies are often just writing the car off rather than becoming embroiled in the cost and complexity of the battery packs or drivetrains.

These electric cars still tend to be relatively new and their values are therefore relatively high. That coupled with lower than average salvage values versus equivalent “traditional” salvage means the insurance companies are haemorrhaging money on motor vehicle claims and are subsequently raising all premiums to offset these losses.

Currently the insurance companies are not differentiating premiums between traditional and electric cars to a big enough degree but as any commercial organisation they will have to address the point soon, in fact it is already a conversation inside the insurance industry so medium term I guess premiums for electric vehicles must rise to allow the insurers to match premiums to risk. 2016 (L405) Autobiography in Black with Ivory - for ULEZ

I personally don't "buy" the fact that EV's are increasing our premiums - if EV's are are a higher risk then EV owners should foot the bill - the same way that a RR driver pays more than a Nissan Micra driver.

Could part of the issue be delays in repairing damaged cars due to a critical shortage of JLR parts? Apparently they are merging 18 parts warehouses into 1 and it is not going well. I’ve seen reports that JLR dealers have circa 10,000 cars awaiting parts. Imagine the cost of hire cars for premium JLR cars awaiting minor trim oarts. 2012 tdv8 Westminster arrived Jan 19 gone Dec 23
