Just a quick question about mileage when looking to buy a 2011/12 L322 4.4 tdv8.

I'm aware that at around 100k mile mark a lot more things start to need attention.

Would I be better off paying more for a lower mileage (80k) vehicle but then also spending out on the inevitable bigger bills...

Or go for one with higher mileage (120k) that has already had the works already carried out? (hopefully with the receipts).

I guess the beauty of the getting the works done yourself is that you choose the specialist but obviously this is a further drain on the wallet.

Any advice/thoughts appreciated.

On your scenarios you’d pay more for the lower mileage and then have to pay again to get the “coming up” repair work done.

Logic would dictate to spend less on higher mileage car with repairs done, so that’s 2 savings…. But that’s in theory.

Bought mine with 82k on and oil cooler had already failed…. Brake lines were at about 95k. There is a thread somewhere with what issues the 4.4 owners had at what point.

Personally, I’d get the colour and trim combo / options that you want, then look at condition and history. Some colours rarer than others.

A difficult one…. The 4.4 does mega mileage if looked after. Sure there is one member on here with over 300k on.

Ignore mileage and just go on condition as they are all very old now and a low mileage one that's just been driven round town will be in worse condition that a high miler that's done mostly M-way driving. 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)

I’d go for higher mileage with a wad of receipts and invoices for work done. E.g oil coolers always need replacing. As do starter motors

bought mine on 83k, now on 124k. inlet manifold and oil coiler changed. just over a coupla grand for both. now running better than ever.

In my experience of 4 FFRRs, mileage is immaterial. Better a 100k+ car that did motorway to Scotland and back each week (as one on here is - 234k ) and was regularly serviced, than a little ol' lady owner, went to the shops and back 3 times a week.

Afraid I dont know anything about diesels but I have a couple of l322 one with 120k the other 240k I have the gearbox oil changed every 30k the engine every between 6 and 10k no problems with either sure the 4.4 will do the same I just changed the rear bags on the 240k and when they were cut open there was still a lot of life in them the fronts I changed at 125k on one the other not yet. Front arms about every 30k rears go on for ever just replace all rear hub bushes at 240k but think I have done them before.
So bits wear out I budget about 3k each year for maintenance on each one sometimes I dont spend it but I do over 20k a year mostly in the high miler and it drives like new my advice would be buy the one you like the most and replace bits during your ownership remember each bit replaced will be good for a few years Good luck and once you have one you won't change

Not much else I can add to the above.
In theory, one that’s done over 100k should have had the usual culprits replaced, oil cooler, starter motor, belts & tensioners etc.
I think, as others have said, find the car that says to you “buy me” nearly always go with your gut feeling. As said many times, try & buy from the forum or failing that, one that has obviously been looked after with loads of receipts.
My first port of call is tyres, see what tyres are on the girl, if they’re ‘ditchfinder specials’ unknown rubbish, a possible indication of the level of maintenance she may well have had. MOT history is always interesting.
One last must……and it is a must……..a big fat wallet full of folding stuff for maintenance, cos if you’re as fussy as most on here, you’ll need it!  2012 Orkney Grey Westminster 4.4TDV8 with Ivory interior.........nice!

Unfortunately when you buy from a dealer you won't find loads of receipts for previous work as GDPR rules mean all personal info has to be removed from any documentation. No dealer is going to go through a folder of repair receipts with a pair of scissors and cut out all the names and addresses so you have to go on your own or a 3rd party inspection. Mileage as has been stated, isn't a great indicator of the condition of a 12 year old car. How many owners, what was the car used for, how was it treated, was it regularly serviced etc.

When you see a cared for example you will know. It doesn't mean it won't need work but any 12 year old car that has as much complexity as a Range Rover is going to see issues over time.

Look at the condition of the car and hopefully it will have a folder of history to back it up.

Sadly it had been reserved with a deposit at the weekend.

I was in a similar position to you a few weeks back, weighing up mileage, age cost etc. Missed a few that I wasn't quick enough on. What I found looking every day at Auto Trader, car guru etc is that one got a bit of a gut feel of which cars would go quickly and which would hang around for weeks which gave a good indication of whether it was a decent or a bad buy. I didn't focus too much on mileage in the end and just looked for a really good service record knowing that there would be a few £k needed for maintenance each year.

I put a deposit on mine without viewing it from a dealer. It had 87k on the clock when I got it, 3 owners, and a very good service record (plenty of stamps, and the past owner had written out on a slip of paper the work he had done in his time - no idea at the time of buying if it was real or not). The first thing I did was take it to my local specialist who confirmed it was very well serviced and maintained but even then recommended the rear brake lines get done. I've also noticed a few other niggles I will have to sort out in time but that's to be expected with these cars.

I really believe per a lot of advice from others who are far more experienced on this forum - buy based on as much history as possible and then factor in some spare cash knowing there will be maintenance items not long after purchase. But also, find the one you like, colour, spec etc - no doubt that a bit of spending here and there is easier when you love the car.

I just thought I’d leave a brief update as to my position on the search for an L322.

I think I may have had delusions of grandeur. Champagne taste with lemonade money (As they say).

As part of my due diligence I contacted 3 independent Land Rover specialists in Derbyshire, Leicestershire and Nottinghamshire.

Their advice was resounding and unanimously…. “Don’t do it”.

After lengthy chats to make sure they weren’t pulling my leg, they ended up saying the same thing, “You will need a lot of patience and very deep pockets when owning a Range Rover”.

Sadly, circumstances in my life dictate that neither of those things are really in abundance. For that reason I’ve decided walk away from my dream of owning an L322… most likely for the last time.

I have to face reality that it’s not a car for everybody.
