United Kingdom 2005 Range Rover Supercharged 4.2 SC V8 Stornoway Grey
New to the forum and I have a few questions...

Hello all,

I've been a silent member of the forum for a month or so now and the search feature has been seriously helpful. It's already helped me diagnose and correct a few issues. This is my second RR I had a very troublesome P38 4.6. He (Ralph) was very much loved problem child so I think I'm glad to have another RR. I'm just praying this one causes me less stress...

I have recently taken on a late 2005 4.2 SC Vogue. It has been my mothers for a good few years now and has always been cared for. That said it's been used very infrequently for the last year or so and with that there were a few inevitable teething issues. It was too good to sell to We Buy Any Car (her original plan!) and having just had a second baby the space was a serious draw.

Anyway I've got a few problems with it...

Firstly the engine warning light comes on with error P0430. A garage diagnosed this when she was running it and suggested clearing the fault by disconnecting the battery come MOT time. I'm not so happy with this strategy. I've got a code reader and can confirm it's the same fault, engine runs perfectly. I'm keen to take her (the RR) on some long journeys with the family and just ignoring the engine warning light doesn't fill me with confidence. I've had a good hunt online and can't find any aftermarket catalytic converters. I can see some old posts about this, but there weren't any viable options. More than happy to remove the catalytic converters entirely, but gather that this might require some imagination to overcome the engine warning light. All suggestions welcomed! I've also ordered a replacement fuel cap, gather this can cause problems, but the fault code seems far too specific. It takes weeks to reappear once cleared, but I work from home so other than very short nursery runs it doesn't get used too often.

Secondly the front right tyre was seriously warn on the very inside edge when I took the car on. The tyres have been replaced, but I want to get the issue sorted before getting the wheels aligned and knackering the new front tyre. Assume this will be to do with worn suspension parts? Control arms? If so can anyone suggest a good compromised between genuine parts and the stuff on ebay for cheap. If the latter works it'll be music to my ears!

Finally I'm getting a squeak/squeal on starting, I've put it down to the power steering pump. This was only replaced within the last couple of years. I understand they can fail due to the steering rack, am I correct in thinking that replacing the rack is an engine out job?

Thanks in advance!

Ollie

Nine times out of 10 PO430 is telling you the oxygen sensor has failed, not the cat... change it first...

Get the alignment done, you need somewhere with diagnostics to put the suspension in tight tolerance mode, if they say it doesn't need it go somewhere else....

Belt squeal is usually one of the tensioners, spray a shot of WD40 or similar at each pully starting at the bottom, when it goes quiet you have found the one... I doubt it's the rack...

Oh and welcome to the mad house... Thumbs Up Pete

Hello Pete and thank you for the very concise instructions. I'll give the WD40 a go.

Only question I have is how I find out if it's the upstream or downstream sensors I need. The reader is saying bank 2 (the drivers side I think?!).

I'd get the suspension bushes inspected before you pay out for any alignment. Lemforder are good but avoid Britpart. Removing the ball joint can be very difficult and maybe best left to a garage. If they have never been changed it's likley both front upper and lower arms will need replacing. I wouldn't sprayWD40 anywhere near a belt. Spray water on it and if the noise goes away the belt is worn/contaminated and or the tensioner has gone weak (talcum powder can sometimes quieten it for a while). If the sound remains then you can pretty much assume it's a bearing on a pulley. 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)

No need to that Pete. I had a squeaky belt for ages and tried everything inc WD40. Also had front and rear suspension arms replaced and wasted money on alignments instead of getting them replaced when they were obviously worn ( original) Just trying to save the OP some ££. Notice I didn't mention the fault code as only had CAT issues on non LR cars so my experience is not relevent. 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)
