Wading an L322

Having just done a Landrover experience day and wading the new Range Rover, I am thinking of taking my L322 round the same track but, I was wondering about the Parking heater as its low down inside the passenger front wheel well.
Will this get flooded and damaged or will it be ok if the car is waded? 2012 TDV8 Autobiography Baltic Blue

It's not low down, it's approximately the same height as the glove box. The L322's were used on the same LRE tracks with no adverse effects, if the water is deep enough to get drawn into the FBH, you're in too deep and will have bigger problems...

Ah that makes sense, I thought it was lower down for some reason, I did wonder if they had issues with them around the courses but obviously not. Thumbs Up 2012 TDV8 Autobiography Baltic Blue

The exhaust & silencer is lower down, the thing about wading is to keep moving - but not overtake the bow wave, you'll be surprised at how low the 'tide mark' is on the side of the vehicle compared to the front.

They should tell you on the LRE - slow in, accelerate slightly to create a bow wave & then steady, to maintain it.

Don't charge in or rush out - it takes a bit of confidence.....

Why risk it? Probably not an issue for the FBH but flooding the box sections etc will not help prolong it's life from rust, ditto brake lines etc. The possibilities of dragging water into places it shouldn't be is simply not worth the risk in your pride and joy. I would just pay to go on a day in someone else's vehicle, then it doesn't matter Cool BMW i3 Electric Car

Alternatively it helps wash crap out from them. Different vehicle but my 1994 Defender on its original chassis has been pressure washed a dozen times in my ownership (last 15 years), waxoyled once, and had bits of paint touched up intermittently.

It's been in the sea, water up to the windscreen, over the tops of the 33" tyres regularly, through peat bogs, deep mud etc, farm use and it's still on its original chassis. More a believer in dunking it regularly and washing things out, just keep the drain holes free of muck. Ed

Glad it works for you. L322 seems to suffer a lot in the area of brake pipes, rear wheel arch, and in my case subframes. Mine was regularly pressure washed underneath but the amount of rust was alarming compared to my previous car (VW Touareg). BMW i3 Electric Car

Speaking from experience they wade pretty well, when I drowned fatty off roader in a Welsh river the water was just over the BECM under the passenger seat.... It conked out when water got to the MAF, took it off, blew it out and it started, lots of faults and spurious things switching on and off but it did get us 200+ miles home...

Stripped it out, washed all the ecu's in purified water dried them and the fatty with a dehumidifier, put it all back together a week later and everything worked, no faults apart from the radio which had previous water ingress....

Then some months later the starter failed, on removal it was found to be full of muddy/rusty water, no sealed bellhousing or wading plugs lets water into the bellhousing it then gets into the starter, which is low down on the drivers side, and can't get out.... the starter is sealed from the outside and even has a vent tube but no drain.... A weird setup...

Overall I was impressed with what it put up with but don't think I'd go too deep in a "road" car....

Fatty off roader was much better after I fitted a snorkel... Thumbs Up
