4.4 TDV8 oil smell question

I have a 2012 TDV8 with 86000 miles in overall great condition. Approx 10000 miles ago it had the oil cooler and EGR gaskets replaced along with other preventative maintenance work.

I get a smell of oil most noticeable after a long journey but no oil under car and absolutely no useage. My LR specialist (who is absolutely fantastic - Crowley 4*4 Wavendon Bucks) had a look for me during some other work as I asked him to investigate and also replace the oil cooler supply o rings (purchased the Vito ones via a Recommend on here).

He checked over the engine and commented how most of these engines have some sort of leak somewhere but that mine is clean and leak free everywhere.

Are there any other sources of oil smell I should look into, thinking PCV system maybe?

Thanks 2012 4.4 TDV8 Vogue Santorini black ivory leather

The smell may just be the old oil down in the V burning off - it takes a while but I'd expect it to be gone by 10,000 miles.

The two oil feed hoses at the back of the engine can leak onto the bell housing. They don't necessarily manifest themselves as a leak, but can cover the bell housing and again, as that gets warm, it burns off.

Another suggestion is that now we're into cold weather, your FBH could be firing up, and it's normal for them to give a slight burning smell. 2015 Range Rover Autobiography 4.4 SDV8

Oil pump gallery plugs can leak a bit of oil. Front of engine. Your specialist will know about that hopefully and have checked it over Thumbs Up Gone to a good home: 2011 4.4 TDV8 Vogue SE Buckingham Blue with Ivory and clear glass = "Rory"

Did you just have the oil cooler gaskets replaced or the whole the oil cooler? 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)

The previous owner just had the gaskets replaced rather than the actual oil cooler. He spent almost £2000 with the garage which left me puzzled as to why he didn’t replace the cooler.

I bought the car at the start of the year but have had some issues which have prevented me from getting much use from the car. It’s certainly cost me a fair bit and just as I think I can start to enjoy the car something else rears its ugly head. This week I got the suspension warning light and discovered my offside front air bag has given up the ghost. £650 to fix using a top quality VDC part. 2012 4.4 TDV8 Vogue Santorini black ivory leather

Eek!

They should have replaced the whole cooler for that price! Most places are around £1000 to do that job. The coolers have been known to warp so new gaskets won't always fix the issue...

Air bag = That's an insane price. Just buy the replacement bag kit from our site sponsor for £200 less the forum 5% discount with code AF4LRP

I should have been clearer. The £2000 bill included EGR gaskets, oil cooler gaskets, belts and tensioners and a service. The devious owner had complained of an oil smell. The bill also showed engine cleaned of all oil deposits and now no oil leaks.

I have seen the repair kits on the sponsors website and others. My concern would be the labour costs to strip and rebuild and the potential for this to wipe out any saving. It’s a day out for me to wavendon as it’s a 190 mile round trip but now I have found someone trustworthy I won’t go elsewhere. 2012 4.4 TDV8 Vogue Santorini black ivory leather

That's a good price if it included all that inc the EGR cooler gaskets as these are a pig of a job - so good it may be too good to be true.....
Buy a cheap endoscope inspection camera and have a look down in the V to see if you can see any oil leaks. 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)

I thought it seemed cheap having brushed up on lots of related old threads on here. I don’t have an endoscope but may buy one, is it a pig to remove the intake to access the V?
