One thing I did notice is that the coolant system seemed to be constantly under pressure even when the engine is cold - this cannot be normal surely?

This is uncommon, but possible, if the car has been maltreated (ie run with too little coolant and allowed to overheat, warping the head and/or gasket).

When running, does your coolant tank bubble away?

When you remove the tank cap (engine doesnt need to be on or warm), is there a black ring around the inside of the cap or the neck or the tank?

Edit: I re-read and saw a dye test has been carried out and confirms presence of combustion gases. The EGR, unless stuck wide open, should only be opening once the vehicle is up to temperature, so i'd have a feel on the pipe from a cold start and see if it starts getting warm from the gases.

If your tank is bubbling away and pressurising even at cold start, and the EGR pipe stays cool, then I think that's unfortunately bad news. If it's under warranty, you may not get a refund, but you should insist the dealer repair it (and if they don't want to / can't, offer you a refund). I'm Southampton based and know two garages who would take this kind of job on (most will refuse), if you need it doing more locally. 2015 Range Rover Autobiography 4.4 SDV8

Sorry to hear that. The dye test is usually very accurate.. Gone to a good home: 2011 4.4 TDV8 Vogue SE Buckingham Blue with Ivory and clear glass = "Rory"

Had this problem at a client car, bought a new aftermarket cooler (you have to cut the coolant pipe adapter from the side because 1mm to thick, fixed with two clamps), my bill incl. flushing three times and a new expansion bottle because of wrong display advice "proof coolant level", was all incl. 1300 Euro (1100GBP). A common problem, lovely to work, difficult only the two rubber seals at the back for the oil pipeline, because I bought little oversized like recommondations in FFR.
