Cold start noise.

My 2010 TDv8 4.4 has recently started making a clacking noise when started from cold, & also makes a squealing noise as if the belt is slipping. My mechanic fitted a new belt & tensioner about six months ago as the old parts were worn. He thinks that the front crankshaft pulley is now slipping where it is bonded together with rubber but a new part is not available. Is this a problem with these front pulleys?

Hi,
The clacking sound it likely to be the viscous fan.
It won’t do any harm but is annoying.
Unfortunately the part isn’t cheap and they are a pain to change as there is a lot to remove.
The fan comes out with the cowl and some coolant pipes need removing to gain access.
There are several idler pulleys on the auxiliary belt and it is worth replacing them all when doing the belt.
I’d be surprised if the main crank pulley is causing the issue but they can fail.
Hope this helps. 2012 TDV8 4.4 Westminster Santorini black

Thanks for your replies. I guess I can live wth it for a while, but I'll keep my eyes open for a good used pulley to try. Even when they are available they cost £700 + vat!!
