United Kingdom 2012 Range Rover Westminster 4.4 V8 Orkney Grey
Complete newbie

Hi there all,

I'm completely new to range rovers and was looking at the l322 4.4 tdv8 diesel. I've been looking at a 2012 Westminster with 97k miles.
I'm currently doing my research but is this too high to start with? If that makes sense to anyone. Is it better paying more to get 50k or max 80? I was just wondering about the turbos and all that stuff on a high mileage, I know thats not really high for the age of the vehicle.
Just wondering what things I would expect to replace or go wrong even at 97k miles.

Hope this helps. I'm new so please let me know! Very Happy

£20K should get you something good 15 for the purchase and 5 in reserve for repairs. Don't rush - spend some ( conciderable) time reading through info on this forum and get as much knowledge as possible. 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)

If it’s any help, I sold my old 2002 200,000 mile petrol v8 Range Rover,, to buy another Range Rover with almost 200k miles on it! A 2012 Tdv8. Westminster. I got it two years ago, with full Land Rover service history, and in very nice condition, with only a little rust on rear tailgate. I service and maintain my own cars, and in that time I’ve done about 18k miles, and have changed the ‘fan belt’ (serpentine belt) and all the pulleys and tensioners, as one was a bit rough sounding. Replace the alternator at same time as the water pump. And had a couple of minor issues with the adaptive damper wiring connections. It’s a fantastic car, and so much better than my outgoing petrol v8. The Westminster model is very nice, and comes with heated and cooled seats, and a few other freebies…. But it could be better, if you sought the pinnacle model, the Autobiography. That has superior leather, and extra trim, and all bells and whistles. And would be in your budget. The Tdv8 4.4 is an amazing engine, and doesn’t have any ‘timebomb’ type issues, like turbos, head gaskets etc. the 8 speed gearbox is a marvel, and the engine cruises with very low rpm, making it the most fuel efficient of all the l322 range rovers. I would recommend the 4.4 Tdv8 to anyone… but….they fall foul of the latest Ulez charge, so you might be in a good position to buy one nearer to London and get a better price, as some owners will be moving them on. -unlike me, in the Ulez zone! The car is too good to ever be sold!!.

I was fixated on low mileage and bought a 2012 with 48k on it, but in hindsight that meant it had spent many years sitting around doing very little, and the subframes on mine had a lot of surface rust - possibly as a consequence.

I've learnt mileage is far less important than whether an L322 has been used and properly maintained, and hopefully cherished. So, if it has cheap brand tyres walk away, that's probably a red flag for other corners that may have been cut.

The suggestion of holding back a chunk of cash for a healthy maintenance budget to "do a bit of minting" and for big ticket fixes is a wise and important one. I've certainly spent more than JayGee's suggestion of £5k over the last 3 years (supercharger rebuild, full underbody rust treatment, and the replacement of the £85 heater blower that requires a complete teardown of the interior - !!! - being the big bills) but fortunately I absolutely love this thing and so it feels worth every penny. Yeah thank you all for the replies! Sorry mine is so late.

I'm having a test drive in one this Monday coming, I just want to see what its like. I'm coming from my c250d merc and not too worried about the fuel economy drop from 55-60 to 20mpg lol I wouldn't be looking otherwise.
I've always loved a RR and think the l322 is definitely the one to look at imo.

I know 97k still isn't a lot for one of these beasts, just a little bit worried about what goes wrong after the 100k mark. I know owning one of these isn't going to be too cheap.
Hopefully if its the right one, I might be a proud owner monday

It’s no different to any other vehicle…..it’s a car & cars go wrong. Admittedly it’s more to service than a family hatchback but if she’s looked after by yourself or a decent Indy, emphasis on decent, then she’ll be fine. Starter motors, alternators, battery’s all play silly Censored around 80k-100k. Service history is important, mileage less so.
I’m down the A14 from you, if you want to look at mine for any reason, just ping me a message or if I can help, ditto.
First point of call is tyres, if she’s on budget tyres that maybe an indication of level of maintenance, I always look to see what tyres people put on these…..just sayin😆

You should get nearer 30mpg out of a TDV8 4.4 if you drive it sensibly. Don't rush into buying one before you know what to check and inspect (which is quite a lot) and have driven quite a few to sort the bad ones from the good. 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)

Absolute beauty of the girl there. I'll see how it goes Monday with this one. Yeah definitely can happen to any car, its currently on Nexen RU1 tyres I believe which isn't awful I don't think. It does full service history so I just have to see the whole thing and check everything!

My tuppence worth is that it’s always about the condition and service history over the mileage. My last 2 cars have been high mileage (150k+) LR Disco 3 and now the 2012 RR Vogue TDV8. Both were in excellent cared for condition, with the service history to back that up.
My general feeling is that if a car has reached the higher mileages it should have been looked after to get there (though not always obvs!) and that most consumable parts and many others will already have been replaced to continue on to the higher miles… from that point on its about ongoing maintenance and a bit of preventative (or pre-emptive) stuff going forward.
In short don’t rule out a car due to the mileage alone. Look over everything as you would any 2nd hand car, arm yourself with some tips from here and ideally a GAP IID tool to check for faults. Thumbs Up Cheers, Steven.

I bought my 2011 TDV8 with 87,000 miles off eBay and it's now on 123,000. Never driven better. I had the diffs oils etc all changed, new inlet manifold and that's all. Had it 5 years and just got back from a 2000 miler to France and back. Not a flutter from the old girl.

So mileage irrelevant, proper TLC vital.
