OIL change YES or NO

Interesting one this, I get my car serviced annually at a good indy but change the oil and filter in between. This month I have a bit of a dilemma I'v not been driving for a few months and was unable to do the oil and filter change at 6 months (I was crocked - its a long story) however the "service required" warning has just come on so the way I see it I have 3 options.

1 Wait until November and get it serviced as normal.
2 Change the oil but not bother with the filter.
3. Just do an oil and filter change as normal.

Obviously the last two will result in fresh oil for a couple of months. It's not really about saving money just not pointlessly wasting it. Anyone have a view? Geoff

It all depends if you’re going to drive it much between now & then?
But, it could mean your dilution has now reached 10% and you could be causing a bit of wear & tear on the engine as a result, which may manifest itself at some unknown point. I’d be changing the oil now and for the sake of a few quid, the filter as well.
If you skimp with a fullfat, it can bite you in the a*se later! Whistle “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” -where’s the fun in that?

Geoff,
I have always been a change oil and filter man every 6 months or 6,000 miles, but recently, like you health problems have caused me to rethink my schedule.

If the car has done less than 6,000 miles since your last change, personally I would be happy to wait a couple of months until it’s annual dealer service is done.

I have never seen any sense in running clean new oil through a dirty filter, so that option is out for me.

I have been logging my oil contamination per 1000 miles , as read on my iid for a couple of years and I am confident to tell you that it takes well over 6,000 miles to get a reading over 4 even with a lot of short journeys, so nowhere near the 7 figure quoted as time to change the oil.

Mike, I thought I’d read somewhere that the 7% dilution limit was raised to 10% by JLR, but I don’t remember where I read that? Embarassed “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” -where’s the fun in that?

So the car has done 108573 miles. Last serviced Nov 9th at 102974miles so has done 5599 miles since then so I was thinking maybe a compromise, change oil and filter now but don't have it serviced again until it has done 10,000 miles - spring next year. Obviously I'll have to get an MOT in the meantime. I can only do short journeys at the moment due to my condition.

This would avoid having the new oil in for only a couple of months and maybe only 1000 or so miles. There's a lot said about oil dilution but I am ignorant of it all at the moment as I do not have an Ingenium engine just an old fashioned V8.

I'm sure there might be something I've not thought of - if so let me know. Geoff

Geoff, I’m unsure if the dilution range was increased on ALL JLR engines affected by dilution, not only the smaller Ingenium ones mentioned in that article. As we all know, the FFRR V6 & V8 engines are affected, or we would all be going 16000 miles/12 months between services.
Perhaps others in the know can confirm if this 100% applies to the 306DT and the SDV8 engines, or are they flagging up an oil change at 6/7% still? I’d prefer to err on the side of caution myself. “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” -where’s the fun in that?

I have a different view, but have no idea about diesel engines or their foibles. In my petrol cars I get them serviced annually. I do that whether they've done 1000 or 12000 miles. I too choose to use trusted indies. I like them to do the service regardless of milage as they check all sorts of stuff - which hopefully doesn't result in further action...but of course might if they spot something up. I agree oil/filter change is a basic essential, but there's soooo much more to a proper service....as long as its actually done and the tick list not just completed by the service advisor in the office. Mike - MPx

If your system is telling you a service is due, and its before your Yearly/16k service, then its telling you that you have fuel dilution. So I would do Number 3. Otherwise your 7% or 10% dilution (if you had the JLR revised update) will be potentially double by November! Shocked
Imagine 14 to 20% dilution.

Gremlin- yes I also have seen that change to software 7 to 10%, I personally believe it was wrong to do that, JLR just wanted the noise to go away as they soon understood servicing was well outside what they were claiming. Not many would buy a car that was advertised as potentially needing 3 to 4 oil changes a year?

So all the references I've seen (thanks for that guys) seem to refer to Ingenium, EU6, MY17 none of which are relevant to me but for less than 100 quid Ill change the oil and filter just for piece of mind and of course its always a bit of fun to open the bonnet, makes me feel like a proper mechanic.

Am I right just to use this stuff SMITH & ALLAN MOMENTUM C1 F 5W-30 - ENGINE OIL also as mine returns as a 2013 which oil filter? Geoff
