Boot electronics compartment / water ingress

After yesterday's downpour my newly installed MKIV Navi started acting up. Turns out water had found its way into the electronics compartment on the rear left. It dripped from beneath the horizontal grille/side trim onto the Navi and from there right onto the DSP multiplug Censored

I swiftly unplugged and dried everything then placed an expedient shedder as first aid (No LR shedded in there)

Upon further investigation, I've narrowed down the list of likely culprits to the following two:

- The crimping of the boot seal along the body at the top of the boot opening.
- The body seams along the top of of the boot opening.

I cleaned and dried the area and as I was apparently unable to get the seal fit any tighter, I applied some black automotive silicone sealant along the body seam and the seal/body contact line.

Let's see how this goes...I strongly suspect the seal as it was most likely disturbed in some way while the headliner was being redone.
And fingers crossed the Navi will come back to life.

I’ve just replaced the tailgate seal with a new genuine part, it fits snugly around most of the aperture except around the two top corners, where the lip is made up of several panels joining together and the seal doesn’t seem to push fully home as it does everywhere else.

I didn’t use any extra sealant, the new seal has it inside already - time will tell if any leaks develop… Whistle

On a previous 2007 L322, I loosened the top tailgate hinges and applied sealant between the hinge and the roof panel, as the water runs right over this area as it spills off the roof and down the side gulleys. Jonathan

I applied some more sealant, along the sides down to the lower tail gate height this time. The water clearly comes from above that level. I did seal the roof rail mounting spots too although rhey probably weren't to blame anyway.

The Navi works now, by the way, so fortunately no damage sustained.

To summarise for those facing the same problem:

There is a TSB which describes the installation of a shedder behind the electronics. That does not address the root cause, which is the leak(s) from various possible places.
There is a procedure / technical bulletin which describes several possible points through which water can find its way into the boot.
The fix is strategically applied, clear silicone sealant.

The places to look at are:

Water ingress from up high

-Bodywork seam along the top of the boot lid opening
-Boot seal crimping around the opening
-Bodywork seams at the top corners where roof panel meets the D pillar.
-Roof rail mounting points

Water ingress from a lower level

-Tail light wiring rubber grommets
-Rear bumper loom rubber grommets
-Rear wheel arch bodywork seams.
