Top up transmission, but I dont know what oil is already in?

Think i should check my transmission oil level. No issues, but I am changing the transfer box oil so want to check it while I am under there.

I know that Lifeguard 6 is what should go in, but I actually dont know what is already in there? It had a new box put in before I bought it, so is it an issue if they used something else (eg Ravenol) and I use Lifeguard 6?

Of course it may not ned any at all!

Cheers

You could drain and refill with the correct oil and the you would be sure what is in it. John

No way of telling without as above but if it had the wrong stuff then it wouldn't last very long...

Don't forget it has to be up to temperature and you need the engine running etc.... Thumbs Up Pete

Perfect, thanks gents.

It was from Bristol Transmissions so I am sure it has the right stuff in.

Probably worth asking therefore which fluid Bristol Transmissions use.

Just one thing to check however; the transmission is a sealed system - it doesn't consume fluid, and there is no topping up needed. If it was serviced by them, the fluid level should be and stay correct. Unless you're checking on a vehicle lift in a workshop, your reading of the drips out the hole won't match that achieved by Bristol Transmissions, and you may end up faffing with it for no real reason.

If it helps, I wrote the guides for the transfer case and diff services:

Thanks Phil.

The reason I wanted to check was hat there was some weeping around the pan. No drips just weeping.

I nipped up all the bolts and thy weeping has stopped, so I thought I had better check the level. Although having read what you said, maybe I will just leave it alone!
