Supercharger oil NYE 605 - SOLVED!

Hi Everyone,

30-AUG-2023 UPDATE:

I solved the issue! It turns out that the information from Bard is not correct. The ACDelco 12345962 (actual part number is: 10-4041) is actually NYE 605. Not a compatible fluid but the genuine product.

I found the MSDS for it where it specifies that it's NYE 605 very clearly.

https://public.spheracloud.net/Pdf/2682741_2_1018518754.pdf

It comes in 118 ml bottles so I ordered two from Amazon this morning at $14.99 USD.

I'm thinking that this same oil should be available around the world so hopefully you too can buy this if you want to replace your supercharger oil.

ORIGINAL POST:

I talked to Eaton this morning and they told me the ONLY fluid I should use in the supercharger is NYE 605.

I found the website for NYE Lubricants (https://www.nyelubricants.com/synthetic-oil-605) and it shows that it's available in a 500 ml bottle. I only need 150 ml but I suppose I don't mind spending a little extra for the larger bottle. But, NYE only sells in orders above $750 USD. The only small volume dealer they officially recommend is TAI Lubricants (https://www.tai-lubricants.com/) who only sells this in 1-gallon buckets for nearly $300 USD!

My local LR dealer has nothing since they officially consider it lubricated for life. Eaton also considers it lubricated for life and does not sell it.

The NYE website does say that it meets the specifications for Ford ESE-M99C115-A and GM 12345982 but this does not mean that either of those meets the specifications for NYE 605.

My local LR dealer did refer me to the GM 12345982 saying that's what they use and it's the same product! Is this the local dealers answer or an official LR recommendation?

I called LR customer service here in the USA and they don't have any official answer. The person there suggested calling a few other LR dealers and seeing what they say. If they all have the same answer, then go with the GM fluid. Otherwise, keep looking.

I also asked Bard (Google's AI chat) about the difference between the 605 and the GM fluid and here's the reply:

Quote:

The NYE 605 supercharger lubricant and the GM 12345982 lubricant are both synthetic ester oils that are intended for use in superchargers. They have similar properties, including excellent oxidation stability and low wear characteristics. However, there are some minor differences between the two oils.

  • NYE 605 is slightly thinner than GM 12345982. This means that it will flow more easily through the supercharger's internal components. However, it is also slightly less viscous, which means that it may not provide as much protection against wear at high temperatures.

  • NYE 605 contains a copper deactivator. This additive helps to prevent copper from forming deposits on the supercharger's internal components. GM 12345982 does not contain a copper deactivator.

  • NYE 605 is slightly more expensive than GM 12345982.
Ultimately, the best supercharger lubricant for your vehicle will depend on the specific make and model of your supercharger. However, both NYE 605 and GM 12345982 are high-quality oils that will provide your supercharger with excellent protection.

I called the LR dealer where I bought it (Scottsdale, AZ) and the parts people there have had this question before but he's never ordered it and they just don't do any servicing on the supercharger. He did say that he'll check into it and let me know if he finds anything.

I also sent an e-mail to a contact I have at Land Rover USA who helped with a previous issue but that may take a while.

So, any suggestions?

Thanks,

Hi David,

Thanks! I have seen their ads on eBay but after talking with an engineer at Eaton he was very clear to ONLY use the NYE 605 oil. Since they don't sell it or manufacture it I'm assuming that there's a good reason and it's not just a "buy our crap so we can make money" deal.

Powerhouse says that it exceeds the Eaton requirements but they don't give any hard data like in what way it exceeds it.

I'm still trying to find a place to buy some of the genuine NYE 605. I may contact my local Land Rover club or some local independent service shops to see if either they have some they would sell to me or if they'd like to buy the gallon bucket less my 150 ml.

Thanks!
