United Kingdom 2012 Range Rover Autobiography TDV8 Baltic Blue
2012 Lower Tailgate Damper

Has anybody on here replaced the tailgate damper on a late L322?

My lower tailgate falls with minimal damping so I ordered a new strut for it.

The new strut doesn’t take much effort to compress and doesn’t pop back out itself. It’s also notchy and not smooth.

Has anybody else replaced this? Are these meant to expand on their own?

Thanks

I just replaced the lower tailgate straps on my 2011 TDV8, but not the damper which seemed fine.

** EDITED BELOW - I got the damper open / close the wrong way around (from my dodgy memory - sheesh, it was only 2 weeks ago...) ***

While doing this though, I noticed that the damper only damps when the lower talgate is dropping. It doesn't give much resistance (that I could tell) when closing the lower tailgate.

With regards to being notchy, that seems a little odd for a damper, but I'm sure it'll be fine being a new genuine item!

Just been out and fitted it to the car. It’s definitely knackered.

Our other 2012 which has the original damper opens smoothly and doesn’t bounce. This one has no damping and it bounces 3 times when opened and left to drop.

Doesn't seem to be doing it's job right.

Mmine was more damped than that and didn't bounce. It certainly didn't softly open, but it didn't get to the end of travel and bounce like your's is now doing.

I also think I've got my explanantion (prev post) the wrong way around about which way the damper goes when opening / closing.

Can't look at my car now to check, as I sold it last weekend to a very nice chap off the forum.

United States 2006 Range Rover HSE 4.4 V8 Buckingham Blue

I thought that was so cool, I went out and found the parts to add it to my 2006.

Here is the link to my YouTube post about it.

It does not seem to do much on the close... but it does prevent the 'bounce' on the open...

Credit where it’s due to Advanced Factors, they shipped a replacement overnight and it solved the problem. It’s now acting properly. 2002 4.6 Vogue SE - Alveston Red with Lightstone Leather
