No crank, starter motor testing question

Hi all,

I'm an idiot. I got through the absolute slog of replacing my alternator when I was tightening the termination back up and a nice big spark showed me I had forgotten to disconnect the battery. Idiot, I know. I should know better. If you can look past my indiscretion I'd be forever grateful.

So the ignition still turns on but the car doesn't turn over, I am trying to narrow down what damage I could have done so I can repair it. I have checked all relative fuses and mega fuses and none are blown. 12v is getting to the starter through the battery cable. I have tried to connect a different 12v feed from a spare battery to the starter solenoid too but still don't get a click. Is there anything else I'd need to do see if it is working? As in, it doesn't need another signal from somewhere, 12v to the post should do it? I just wanted to make sure I have done the correct test procedure and not missed anything before I order up a new one for no reason.

Thanks in advance!!

For anyone with a similar question in the future, I recommend using diagnostics to access the actuation of the starter motor (via the BCM menu) which can give you a good idea of what is at fault here if you suspect the starter. You should get the motor turning over if you switch the signal to on and have the button pressed.

Cheers

I was having slow starter problems with my 2008 Range Rover tdv8. I found the braided earth strap had corroded. It fell apart in my hand. It is located at the drivers side (UK ). Chassis to subframe. Fitted a new one and the car starts perfectly. The battery is being charged fully now. Hope this helps .
