Considering an L405 S/C what to look for?

Hi everyone!

I have an L322 at the moment and I have two issues with it that cannot be fixed.

One is that it’s not the 5.0 S/C. Yes, many will say the TDV8 with its torque is better suited to the car and I do agree… I just feel that car should have the S/C engine. The “fix” is easy… and its to replace car with another with the desired engine. There are several choices out there at the moment.

However, the other issue is with rear passenger space! It’s surprisingly tight in the back for such a big car, especially with getting in and out of the back door!

I believe the L405 is better than the L322 for rear passengers, but I am also swaying heavily towards the LWB.

So, an L405 with the 5.0 S/C Autobiography LWB is on my common search criteria at the moment!

Now, my question is “what do I look for” when searching for cars. In the L322 it would be rust on the rear arches and if the timing chains had been changed, but the L405 doesn't suffer from rust in those places, and (I believe) the chains are no longer an issue too?

When were the revised models released and is it worth stretching up? I know it’s preferable to avoid the early (2013) models due to there being more gremlins, and I believe there was a 2015/2016 revision? And again at 2018?

If I was to go LWB I believe that they are 2016 onwards so that feels like a good starting point for me.

What are your thoughts? Currently driving: 2012 L322 SE Overfinch 4.4 tdv8

What about high mileage L405’s with the 5.0 S/C engine? 100k + miles for example… Currently driving: 2012 L322 SE Overfinch 4.4 tdv8

Any car you look at, ask if its had the chains and tensioners done, post 2018 cars should be ok.

Look for signs of coolant leaks, general condition of leather and trim, check everything works, all the usual stuff.

I was sure I read chains were not an issue in the l405.

The interior quality is definitely a consideration. There is an amount I’m willing to do to “spruce” it up… but if I have to tackle squashed foam or tears then that’s too far for me… Currently driving: 2012 L322 SE Overfinch 4.4 tdv8

Scotland 2017 Range Rover Autobiography 5.0 SC V8 Corris Grey

Based on my 2017 MY (52,000 miles) you might look for:

- galvanic corrosion on nuts on wings around backs of headlights and just below there, also under flap behind lower tailgate;

- corrosion aluminium strip across tailgate including number plate light area;

- corrosion parking sensors especially at rear (gives false readings);

- worn/perished bushes anti roll control bars, suspension arms;

- upper tailgate alignment;

- oil leak transmission oil cooler pipe connector;

- thudding on downshifts (in my case cured by software reboot, there is a bulletin on this, not applied unless requested/needed) has just started happening again so will need to see if needs doing again or if some other problem;

- gear selector knob moving freely and silently (mine replaced as sticking/squeaking);

There have been various software problems, e.g. false error messages, seats/headrests moving of own accord, cured by rebooting. Unless the problem manifests itself while you are testing you can't really check that.

Rear brake pads wear more quickly on 405 as balance front/rear is different to 322. Positive aspect is less chance of rear caliper seizure. Depending on age check differential oil changed when due, also gear oil.

I think LR/Ford went to metal as opposed to plastic chain guides on the 5.0SC after the early 405s so have not had problems with that.

I like the car and prefer the pre 2018 styling, especially inside. Only Range Rovers since 1988

That's what I thought until I spoke to a local specialist who told me he'd seen the old style chain guides on 2015's a couple of 2016's and one 2017. It's not like Jag where they changed the material, its the original chain guides were aluminium, the later ones have a hardened peg where the tensioner makes contact.

In 2017 during the first facelift, they improved the screen removing the buttons at the side. In 2018 the lower heater controls became glass touchscreen too.

Mine is a 2017 so it has the nicer screen, I wasn't too fussed about the glass lower panel. 2017 4.4 SDV8 Autobiography in black
