'07 tdv8 steering "freeze"

Hi all!
Very odd problem here:
All of a sudden, Tuesday morning, my steering has gone wonky. It was OK when the car last ran on Saturday. It sort of freezes when the wheel is kept stationary for anything more than a second or two. As long as I twirl the wheel, it seems normal, but once I've kept it in one position for any length of time, it will be slightly reluctant to move from that position without some extra effort.
As you can imagine, this is quite disconcerting, since the extra effort required easily leads to excess lock being applied once it "breaks free". It's noticeable even from start, but gets worse after a little while and then stays pretty much the same.

Any ideas what could be amiss? Fluid level and belt are OK.

I've had steering issues before, but quite different. That time it turned out to be something as unlikely as a bad FBH. You can check this topic: https://www.fullfatrr.com/forum/topic47667.html
It was very odd. That time, I would loose part of the power assistance a few seconds after setting off and it would stay heavy, but smooth. Now it's notchy.

It seems to me more than a strange coincidence that before that last and uneventful trip on Saturday, I had replaced the webasto ECU. The old one was burnt and it's been more than a year since it last worked.
I thought that the new issue must be related, so I unplugged the FBH again and pulled the fuse, but the problem remained. I reconnected the heater and then, last night, I noticed the interior lights come on and then dim off after a few seconds. The car was locked at the time and I was outside with my hands nowhere near the key.

I still suspect that the FBH is somehow causing a problem in the data bus system and that this ultimately causes my steering problem, but I don't have a clue as to the how and the why.
If anyone out there with deep knowledge of the strange workings of this car can offer any theories or likely explanations, I would be most grateful.

Kind regards,
Henrik

It sounds more of a mechanical issue, possibly the Cardan joint in the lower steering column is binding.
