There are both 'M' and 'E' versions of the ZF6HP boxes, 'E' versions using 'shift-by-wire' rather than a conventional cable; so they can have gear selection by button, rotary, electronic stick, paddles, etc.

Yeah, 'E' version boxes were fitted to a lot of BMW models and I believe some Audi, Lexus models as well - and probably many others. They're all controlled via CANBus commands rather than electronic switching and a park-brake cable. The mechatronics units have an additional solenoid for Park selection, and the pressure pathways can differ as can the spring specifications for some of the valving.
