Another one yet unusual and curious SAS error L322 Trifecta | |
Hi to all people of this Forum!
Shortread:
No luck trying to get rid of ABS error code 61 - steering angle sensor calibration/identification as of Trifecta and Air susp. inactive.
- wires from SAS to ABS checked (all good)
- replaced steering angle sensor for 3 times (details in longread)
- replaced ABS module with another one from same L322 with same engine
- new battery
- alternator giving 14,1 volts on idle with lights on, but soon will rehaul it anyway.
Error 61 in ABS module is present despite all tries to calibrate SAS using PA soft/ Thinkdiag/ Testbook T4 (reseting sensor by turning steering wheel and taking for a drive).
Errors present (diagnosed with PA soft):
ABS module
5a temporary system deactivation
61 steering angle sensor calibration/identification
EHC module
32/50 Can Bus error
Also some unrelated errors in IKE (checksum, cluster was replaced but VIN coded with PA soft) and LCM (dimmer and self level system).
Some info to help:
Checked Air Suspension with INPA, all valves are operating, sensors have normal voltage and suspension level can be calibrated, BUT car will lower the front after starting the engine (looks like it lowers on same level despite calibration) and after shutting the engine off, open-close the door and car will level itself to the calibrated height.
Appreciate any help and advice!
And the longread:
Few months ago I’ve bought my first RR, 2002 L322 Td6 Jawa black (I’m from Europe). Vehicle had ~160k miles on odometer, attractive price and Trifecta on the dash. Getting no info from seller (just a local used commission car sale place) and without suspecting something serious I’ve sealed the deal.
So, after getting back home, I started to fight with those nasty errors. Firstly plugged in my P.A. soft 1.4 (Bmw scanner). I saw that LEW module (one that corresponds for SAS) was’t communicating at all. Thinking to get rid of all problems fast and easy, I quickly bought SAS from a wrecker. At the time I wasn’t familiar with L322 electronics, so i just bought sensor from E53 X5 as i was thinking that it will work the same as it would on any Bmw. Well, from this moment all it started. After installing that fresh sensor, I’ve plugged in diagnostics and got next errors:
ABS module error 5a (temporary system deactivation) and error 61 (steering angle sensor calibration/identification)
EHC module error 32/50 Can bus
I’ve attempted to calibrate sensor with Bmw scanner and no luck at all. Errors stayed there without flicking an eye. At that moment I’ve already got acquainted with all similar threads on the forum. So, I assumed that P. A. Soft might be not enough and went to local shop with Thinkdiag/ Launch scanner. Guy from that shop tried multiple times to calibrate sensor. We managed to make errors disappear after performing calibrating procedure on his diagnostics and having a short drive. At first i was like WOW! But errors came back after shutting car off and starting it back. Same code 61 error in ABS module and newly added LEW ID error in LEW module (SAS). Again multiple tries, this time during driving, and we managed errors not to come back after immediate restart (shut off and start again right after). But same errors came back some time after shutting car off (10-15 mins). Guy from shop assumed that maybe I have issues with ABS module as it doesn’t seem to save SAS calibration. Also we noticed that my L322 has instrument cluster from same era 4.4 bmw engine version. I saw that cluster wasn’t original when i was buying the car, but they put the original one in the trunk, so just didn’t paid it much attention (thought that it was replaced because of broken pixels). So back at home, I’ve coded IKE (instrument cluster) with car VIN using PA Soft and decided to look for a shop with Testbook T4 soft to help me out. One was found in nearby city and i was there next day. It appeared to be RR wreckers and specialised shop with bunch of Rangies getting repaired. The guy from this shop said that it’s no big deal that instrument cluster isn’t the original one, checked wires from ABS module to SAS (all good), tried to calibrate SAS with T4 (no luck) and found out that my steering sensor has a bit different part number from the original one (few digits were different). He said that buying SAS with other than absolutely the same part number can cause a bunch of issues, so it is better to install the suitable one. We double checked part numbers with initial one (dead one), all seemed to match. Also he said that if replacing SAS with right one won’t help, most likely I will have to replace the ABS module and this time it is better to find it not only with same part number but to have it removed from car with same engine. Willing to end it fast i ordered another SAS and installed it right after getting in in my mail. Errors still stayed there, except for LEW ID error in LEW module. I had it calibrated by the guy from local shop (the first one) but this time we didn’t make it far,he wasn’t able to make errors disappear at all, they stayed there despite all tries. So, i decided to do something with ABS module. That evening I seemed to find with PA soft a new error in abs - code 8a (air suspension). So at first I sent the ABS module to a repair shop - they didn’t find any issues with it, but that shop wasn’t familiar with RR modules, only Bmw, and I decided to replace module with another one. Ordered one listed as fully tested and working from Ebay in GB. And, as you already guessed, no difference at all with that fresh ABS module. Code 5a and 61 in ABS and Can Bus error 32/50 in EHC. So, i wanted to give it another shot and ordered one more steering sensor (with exact part number). And… no luck, all the same. Don’t know where to look next. Thank you for making it down here!
Cheers!
