FFRR insurance

Hi guys,

It’s the time of year for our insurance renewal. Has anyone got any experience good/bad with companies and pricing?

It’s our first dedicated FFRR quote having simply swapped vehicles over last year from D4 to our SDV8.

A quick internet insurance trawl produced prices ranging from £1050 with LR insurance to £550 with Aviva via money supermarket.

Any help or recommendations are most welcome.

Spend a little bit of time doing a "structured" search using comparison sites. Have a look at the advice on the Money Saving Expert site as to how to check all sites, and then add in those insurers who aren't on comparison sites like Direct Line.

If you live somewhere fairly rural then also ring up NFU Mutual as many members have said they are very competitive (if you fit into one of their "standard" policy boxes)

I've been very happy with Admiral and been with them for about 7 years. Every year I still do a comparison and then, armed with the best prices I can find, I ring them up and haggle with them. Every year they have beaten my lowest or come so close that I wouldn't bother changing just to save £30.

Believe it or not the AA have come in at £200 with full comp, protected no claims. This will also give me something ridiculous like 70% off family breakdown cover.

My renewal is December, and I shall be keenly searching then. I changed cars in March, and Admiral took the opportunity to stiff me for an extra £200, so annualised at about £900 a year, and as I was halfway through the year on my policy what choice did I have but to accept it...

December should see me get some more realistic quotes. Ill bear the AA in mind!

thats sound advice from Rob99.

remember theres many variables to an insurance quote, where you live, your age, ncb etc so if a certain company gives a good price for one person they might not be ok for another.. ... - .- -.

Thanks Stan Thumbs Up Thumbs Up

Generally you can't lie about your age, where you live etc but I've always found that if you tweak the other things, especially around occupation, you can often get a better quote as insurers don't all use the same job titles/employment sector. For example, my wife works for a company providing clinical trial software to pharma companies so it's a toss up whether she ends up in the IT sector or the Pharma sector depending on which is cheaper Laughing 2021 D350 Fifty Edition - Carpathian Grey

As above, I vary between Chartered surveyor, property developer or Company Director depending on which is cheapest, all are true, so no issues chopping and changing. Generally Chartered surveyor comes in chepest tho. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

The optimum time to search is 21 days before renewal.

Thanks for all the kind and informative replies. We are currently with the AA so hopefully they will prove competitive with their quote. I will do another search approx 21 days before renewal Thumbs Up

I'll be getting into a FFRR in the next few weeks and I'm a bit surprised at the insurance market for these.

I'm a retired cop, advanced driver, LGV licence, no claims for over 30 years, moving into a Health and safety role (I'll need business cover driving to different locations), living in a small provincial town that doesn't have any particular theft problems and I'm either refused insurance or the cheapest quote is £700. My BMW 335i was less than 200.

Anyone any ideas who is likely to be more reasonable? First time FFRR owner

Mines due in 10 days and renewal price is £230… retired, parked in drive 5,000 miles a year social and domestic only with RAC.

I think if you step up into a L405 they need a tracker fitted to keep down costs. Try NFU and potentially a broker, can you not get cheaper insurance through Police confederation? 2012 tdv8 Westminster arrived Jan 19 gone Dec 23

Hi Bob,
Thanks for your thoughts, I think I need to look into the tracker and see how that helps bring the cost down, the Police Mutual insurance co wont quote me. I'm currently with them for my BM. I'll need to travel to different locations with the new job so will need business cover, I suspect that may be adding to it too.

ETA, tracker makes no difference to the premium. cheapest is Esure with 740 First time FFRR owner

Easy enough to flip business cover on and off when using a comparison site to see what sort of difference it makes. I do the same with MrsWold even though she'll never drive it. Chris
