2004 4.4 V8 Transmission Fail Safe error

In time for the snow the rangie has thrown a gearbox fault. Driving Tuesday evening in town got a thump from drivetrain then failsafe error on dash. Cleared on shut down/start up but then reappeared including what felt like no drive as revs rose but no forward motion. I left it parked up safely and went back today. Started fine then fail safe error so read codes (above). Cleared them then managed to drive the 10 miles home in manual mode with no error although still thump going from 1 to 2.

Read faults once home and no transmission faults. Found this post in another forum with similar codes but slightly different symptoms…

We’ve still got about a foot of snow so not getting under it yet…..but does this sound a sensible first approach?

My post from 10 years ago, that you referenced above, specifically relates to the speed sensors. That doesn’t appear to be on your list of error codes.

Unfortunately, those IID Tool fault codes are just generic fault codes (rather than Land Rover specific P codes) which make diagnosing the exact fault with your 5HP24 difficult.

Were you able to engage all 5 forward gears, and Reverse, without problem in Manual mode?

Phil

Hi Phil, and thank you for your help.

In manual mode definitely reverse works and got up to 3rd in manual but I was driving slowly due to conditions.

Been out this morning and in low box it seems to go through the gears as much as I can tell in the driveway.

It’s still v snowy here around Inverness!

Ta,

G

Checked the oil level this morning seemed running out at 40 degrees so that’s ok.

Driving it, there is a thump as it goes 1 to 2 then pings Fail Safe Mode. I also had it in manual mode and the fail safe came on and the gear went to 5 on the dash.

So sounds like the A clutch as described here:- Big Cry
