metallic whining noise from front of car when driving

Hi guys. I have a 65 plate L405 4.4 SDV8 Autobiography.Drives well but seems to feel the road potholes more & more. I had a metallic compressor type of noise appear about 3 months ago at the front of the car on the near side. It has become more noticeable & you can hear it almost all of the time now. I don't have a clue what it is however I am loathed to take her to the main dealer. Anybody had anything like this ?

FBH? (fuel burning heater) - pre-heats engine and cab if fitted.
