Warmed up in about 20mins just now but still not getting above 75deg unless under load like uphill on the m-way. Needle on dash visibly dropping when slowing down on 50mph sections and hardly 70deg 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)

Thermostat isn't closing properly, you can confirm with an IR thermometer or a FLIR if you can get your hands on one.

I concur- the drop in temp simply should not be happening on a running engine. 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)

Also rubber seal on metal plate can be damaged on thermostat - then valve is not tight enough in closed position. - needs to replace whole thermostat insert.

Running engines will normally drop in temperature, especially with a low ambient or high windchill factors, a working against load running engine should not.

Had a quick chat with Ross at Glenrands and he immediately suspected the thermostat so booked in on Monday to have it changed. 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)

Here you go JayGee:

Looks like it's getting to the correct temperature, but staying open too long to get there. This was after a 5 mile trip across the city.

@GaryRR - those look similar temps to mine. 5 miles at 20mph ( London street limits) and 30mins and it's not up to what I'd call 'operating' temperature. 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)

Seems a fair diagnosis then that your thermostat is stuck open until hot.

I guess not to be unexpected at over 10 years old. 2015 Range Rover Autobiography 4.4 SDV8

According to the workshop manual the thermostat should start to open at 88deg C. 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)

Part still on backorder so definitely no fix until well into Jan now.. Started it up for the first time after being frozen solid for a week. FBH remote warmed up the inside nicely 10mins before I got in it which was nice. Let it idle while I cleared the snow and ICE and the temp gauge moved off cold fairly quickly but as soon as I'd driven 1/2 mile it had dropped back down again. Opened the bonnet and the radiator top hose and top of radiator were warm ( 25deg according to my infrared thermometer) but the engine parts were much colder so I'm in no doubt of the issue now. Looks like the weather is warming up next week so fingers crossed this is just a running issue and doesn't get worse. Thinking back it's been like this for ages but only obvious when the cold snap started. 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)

Update.....
This was the cause

The official procedure is to replace the whole coolant distribution box (which was the part on backorder) and separate the temp sensor housing on top but inevitably these heat damaged plastic things break when being removed and parts are on extended back order
The actual thermostat housing maybe able to be removed in situ ( part 4) as it faces the front

It's held on by 4 torx fastners which needed my 400Nm impact driver to remove them on the bench but they are self tapping so did come out unlike the other fasteners which are into brass inserts which seized and just spun.
AFAIK the thermostat is not available as a spare but even if you have the upper and lower body it's possibly advisable to try to swop out the thermostat and housing and not disturb the rest. I'd assume this thermostat is a generic part and not made specially for JLR so it may be obtainable. There are no markings on it apart from 88 on the top which is the opening temp.
