Supercharger moan/unpleasant whine at low engine speeds.

Can any help? I have 100K mile 2010 Supercharged L322 - my fourth RR and it has been great. However, it has just developed an unpleasant moan/whine at tickover. The engine still has immense power if required and the noise disappears under load! The noise can be heard from outside the car with the bonnet down and is present when cold or at temperature.

Here in Switzerland no body repairs anything; labour is massively expensive and they merely change the entire part or tell you to sell the car. Potentially lazy up-selling garage just said change the whole SC but apparently upon him checking no new SC are to be had in Europe.

To me it appears to come from the front of the SC. Should I first try to have local mechanic change the "snout and pulley" with a service kit. L322 5.0l SC

Hi,
I say first run the engine with a disconnected SC drive belt.
If the noise than is gone you know surely its the SC.
It can be the alternator or a belt tensioner or………

I have a whine on my 4.2, but i am fairly certain its the alternator.

I used a mechanics stethoscope and when I touched the alternator I nearly deafened myself Mr. Green

Philip & Piet,
A belated big thank you for your prompt and helpful feedback. I had not relied earlier as I took my car to a British car specialist here near Zürich. They determined that it was a failed supercharger causing the whine/howl.

Four weeks later the garage eventually tracked down a new compressor from a UK independent after an Europe wide search - Land Rover apparently quoted March next year. They also found a faulty valve linked to the compressor and this had to be sourced via Ebay from China. Again no Land Rover sourced parts available.

I picked the car up today and all seems sorted. Not had the bill yet but it will be a Swiss one e.g. 50%+ more than it would be in the UK.

My fourth RR and no doubt will have another one. Although a major problem which will be expensive and took a month to fix I have generally had a good experience.

Thanks Gents!

Hi Alan

I guess the Garage was Emil Frey, because only they are unable to "find" parts in CH or EU-Wide.

Had this experience after some Censored Deliver-Van driver opened the door just in front of me, his insurance insisted of repairing the FF at Emil Frey (largest importer and Garage for JLR and other makes in CH), it took them 11 days!! to get a new RH-front door, window and mirror, the rest was repairable. I was searching the net and could have the parts delivered from UK in 3 days!

Back to your supercharger; I just recently changed the snout on my 5.0 SC, ordered a rebuilt one in UK for £ 360.00 including all seals and oil, and was delivered express (bit pricie) within two days. Which means there are superchargers available all over. New ones and rebuilt ones.
Changing the snout and the water pump then took me about 4 hours at home.
