What is this part?

Hi Everyone,

I needed to replace my passenger side valve cover gasket (I'm in the USA with a LHD car) and while disconnecting the battery I saw a mouse had chewed a hole through what looks like either a vent or a cover for a wiring loom. But, I haven't been able to find the part name/number.

I put a red circle around the hole in the attached picture.

Depending on the price and difficulty to replace I may just patch it with some RTV.

Any idea or pointers?

Thanks!

Damned rodents Censored

I'd patch it right up with a dab of black RTV sealant. You can reasonably smoothen the material with wet fingers to a near perfect finish. Replacing could do more harm than good.

Yep, I'll almost certainly end up doing the RTV patch. But, I'd still like to know what it is. If it's not too expensive and not too difficult to replace I may replace it.

I guess I'm just a bit too pedantic Smile.

Thanks!

Could this be the part? It's hard to tell from the parts images.

It looks very much like the bulkhead grommet for the electrical harness.
Changing that (if available, which I very much doubt) would be a very involved job. RTV won't bond successfully to it, better to use a tyre patch and some tyre patch adhesive, once fitted, give the edges an overcoat of tyre adhesive. Make sure you clean the grommet and the tyre patch well beforehand with some tyre buffer or adhesion promoter, scuffing the area where the patch will go with remove any oxidisation and provide a 'key'. You can use a mushroom patch, just cut off the stem.

The front left corner of your picture is another wiring loom the mice seem to love! Had several cars in with spurious faults due to rodent damage!!!

RTV won't adhere? Never even considered the possibility. I'll swing by my local car parts store to buy some of the tire patch you suggested.

The black plastic one or the brown ground wire? The ground wire has already been chewed up a bit too. I'm going to replace that since it's an easy replacement.

The Black plastic one… if you have the time? I did a small write up on just this issue and put some pictures up where some customers cars were chewed and what the wiring was for (if I remember correctly?) 👍
