L322 or L405, who has the best booty...

Lots said on here about the 405 having a smaller boot than the 322... Only had my 405 for a week but I couldn't see it myself....

A bit of research shows that different places measure it differently and can be misleading...

Quotes from reviews....

L405 From Car Buyer "First, the good news: the Range Rover has a massive 909-litre boot."

L405 From Parkers "Range Rover’s luggage space is more than enough for most people, with 725 litres"

Nearly 200ltrs difference on the same car. I couldn't find more than two places who quoted the same ltr capacity, they all vary a lot which makes you think it's impossible to accurately measure capacity in such a multi faceted shape...!!!

Dimensions from How many bags fit...

L405 - 943 litres with rear seats upright to the roof

L322 - 973 litres with rear seats upright to the roof

I think this reflects the fact that the 405 curves in more towards the roof on the sides and the boot...!!

Now IMHO the important sizes... Shows that the 405 has a more usable space if you don't pile it to the roof... better in every dimension other than width of boot opening where the alloy body has to wrap around more for better body stiffness.

BOOT DIMENTIONS from RIDC

Length of boot floor - back row of seats folded down or removed
L322 1881mm L405 1900mm

Length of boot floor - back row of seats upright
L322 1070mm L405 1079mm

Vertical height of boot opening
L322 916mm L405 821mm

Boot sill height to floor of car
L322 52mm L405 0mm

Boot sill height to ground
L322 791mm L405 855mm

Width of boot floor at narrowest point
L322 1045mm L405 1120mm

Width of boot opening - bottom
L322 1231mm L405 1127mm

So, the size of the floor of the boot is bigger on the 405. The space under the parcel shelf, which, incidentally is the same height above the floor on both cars, is greater in the 405. The 322 wins on absolute space when loaded fully to the roof...

One thing it doesn't win at though is headroom getting in the front, the door openings are lower and the screen raked more, which means at 6"5' I hit the top of the opening when getting in, which was never a problem with the 322...

I'll leave this here and wait for the onslaught...... Whistle Pete

I know, I'm very sad, but the more I tried to find measurements the more different values I found...

Stan, let Mrs Stan know that you have the biggest available.... Thumbs Up Bow down Pete

I feel that the only way to truly know tue volume of each is to fill them both with jelly then measure it whilst eating it, probably in spoons per boot. Perhaps a project for the next meet-up?

I found if it’s outright height you need the L322 was better, but for usable width and length the 405 is better. It depends what you use the boot space for - I find the 405 better as I have dog boxes and gun cases & shooting bags in the boot - width and length is better for my use. If I was moving furniture then 322 would win 2021 L405 Vogue SE 4.4 V8 DIESEL ~ #17

It annoys me that they don’t make the width of the floor 1200mm so you can get a standard sheet of material in the back horizontally. V8 or else ...

well if you take the rear seats out of the L322, you can slide in an American style fridge freezer and close the tailgate Smile

just did this tonight, I bet the 405 would struggle to accommodate it Rolling with laughter

Kenwood Fridge Freezer Width 92 x Height 180 x Depth x 72 ( including front handles )

Well, the blinkin rear seats dont fold flat on the 405, as they did in the 322, that part's not helpful I find! '17 RANGE ROVER L405 SDV8 AB LOIRE BLUE with INDUS SILVER ROOF

I have commented on this before, horses for courses (pun intended), 405 will not take as much stuff as 322 for us, couple of saddle racks with saddles and assorted crap, can be worked around however one thing that does annoy me on the 405 is the upper tailgate, press that button and run, its lethal and slow, maybe just mine, put the dogs in the back and they can jump out, 1st world problems Rolling with laughter

Not surprised the dogs want to jump out when you have a couple of saddle racks with saddles and assorted crap in the boot as well Whistle Pete

We are forgetting a RR is a luxury 4x4, it isn’t a van for builders or furniture removals - 99% of new purchasers - which is the market that matters, get their stuff delivered, or have alternative vehicles 2021 L405 Vogue SE 4.4 V8 DIESEL ~ #17

Anyways … who doesn’t a couple of extra inches here or there … Rolling with laughter Thumbs Up V8 or else ...
