Anyone got a wireless security camera system?

Hi all.

As we are getting towards completing our house reno I have begun looking at installing the above. Looked on google - bewildered aint the word!

Where does one start?

Can anyone recommend a system? Do you have one which is reliable and gives good pictures etc? Nightime vision good? We don't want / need monitoring by a third party but do want to be able to monitor ourselves on our iPhones. I can install power supplies to external camera positions x 4 plus would want internal security zones monitored by internal cameras x 3 such as the kitchen, hall and landing etc. I'm happy to install a hard drive and have additional cloud back up. It would have be compatible with the BT mesh we have throughout the house using those dish extenders.

I have been looking at the Google Nest system - any good? We already have google things throughout the house so seems logical.

We have the HIK vision system attached to the drive gates and intercom and its pants so am avoiding the HIK cameras.

Any advice or experiences would be welcomed.

PM sent - thanks.

Never heard of that Co but the products and website look promising.

Do they store any data anywhere and can you link to a smart phone?

Companies like Nest and Ring do good and simple to use systems that can have a multitude of internal and external cameras set up. I use both and find them good (including motion sensors in the garage). Current: Range Rover L322 4.4tdv8, Porsche 911 (996) Carrera 2, BMW 535d Touring, Skoda Fabia, BMW S1000XR

I have several REOLINK around my property. Had them a couple of years now with no problem. They are WiFi & solar powered, & often come up on Amazon as specials.

Have a ring set up, with floodlight cameras, alerts straight to mobile , not cheap but works very well, I just replaced existing lights , very easy to set up too. Very adjustable for area alerts too.

That’s interesting that you’re not impressed with the HIK Vision stuff as it’s usually very good and has a good rep. I know a few people who use it and are very pleased with it.

To anyone considering a company with a high TV profile their on-line feedback is worth a read.

Why I don't rate the HIK.....We have HIKVision 'iPad' in the kitchen linked via our BT router to the driveway gates opener and intercom / camera. It is also partnered with the HIK app on our phones. No matter how we try to configure the set up, if someone rings the intercom our phones go off and keep sounding even when we answer the call. The iPad thingy set up was a real PITA and the sub menus are confusing.

They reset to factory after a power cut (which we get a lot of) and we often have to 'reload' the iPhone app a couple of time just to open the gates when leaving or arriving. As an aside - the coding is a rolling code so the gate buttons in the RR don't work

Other than that - its great.

Hindsight is a wonderful thing but I am loathed to trust the HIK to do anything additional such as security.

Similarly our google assistants 'sometimes' operate the lights when asked or 'sometimes' recognise the telly as a device. The routines sometimes decide to do different things - all very fragile!

I'm not convinced smart home tech is 'there' yet. 405 AB exec seats Baltic and Cirrus

For a cheap and cheerful option:

I have 5 CCTV cameras around my property, plus a Ring doorbell.

Cameras are available on Amazon for c.£20 for HD and £30 for 4k (although i find on generic cameras 4K is more equivalent to HD on an expensive camera) which use the app 'YI IoT'. The app is really easy to use and you can download a desktop version to run on the computer too. Each camera has a 64GB SD card in, which keeps a rolling 5 days of footage.

Day vision is great, night vision is good to about 15 metres.

The cameras have led to a successful prosecution of someone causing damage to an electricity cable on my property.

The 'person detection' feature on Ring is absolutely fantastic. I've found any other cameras which claim to feature person detection give a lot of false alerts (such as a spider crawling over the camera or soffit board appearing as a large moving object to the camera and thus, it thinks it's a person). So, I have person detection switched off on the CCTV and instead, them recording all the time and, instead let the Ring detect the person and then if I need to, go and look at that timestamp on the other CCTV cameras.

Another point, most camera installation instructions tell you to install the camera as high up as possible. I disagree with this. From those kinds of angles, you can't get an accurate face shot and the police will find that as an excuse not to progress the crime. Instead, I recommend installing cameras at a height which is out of reach but, gives a good angle for a facial shot (e.g. 3 metres). There is another reason for this - it enables cleaning with a pole or hose. Cameras get grubby with mud carried by the wind and cobwebs etc. 2015 Range Rover Autobiography 4.4 SDV8
