Gearbox replacement or torque converter

I have the dreaded shudder once into 4th and facing any type of incline. Have approached Bristol Transmissions for some advice to be told that the gearbox would most probably need a rebuild as well as replacement torque converter. Their advice being that as the car is over 130k (it’s on 175k miles!) it would be best practice to do both gbox refurb and new torque converter.

Has anybody any further advice or history of their own they can share? I’ve been quoted £3.5k plus VAT to do both. 2007 Range Rover Vogue 3.6 TDV8

Hello old chap,

Not sure if you fully read my tale of woe but I ended up using a place that I would recommend:

The path you take is going to be very dependant on your attitude to the car, keeping it, on a budget, etc etc. I don’t regret doing the rebuild but you can most certainly achieve a similar outcome for a lot less with a used box.

It would be best practice, yes. Best practice for them.

I just read a post on fb with the same symptom and after the same remedy performed by a transmission specialist, it’s still there.

In your shoes, I’d rather get a second opinion from a Land Rover specialist than risk someone getting their practice in at my expense. Des

Hi Rudyard1,

I had the dreaded judder and weird shifting - I also got a few specialists to look at it who confirmed it was most slightly torque converter.

Bristol Transmissions said the same to me and my heart dropped at the price... anyway after speaking to a few garages and friends I was recommended CAL Transmissions in Denton.

I gave them a call, spoke with Simon, Full box rebuild with torque converter was c.£1700 + VAT.

I dropped it to them on the Monday and collected it on the Friday and they had done a complete overhaul. They were a 2 hour drive from me so rented a car from Enterprise round the corner whilst they had mine.

Super knowledgeable and genuine team + gave 12 month unlimited mile warranty.

I would recommend calling them to see if they can help 2009 Pre-facelift TDV8 Vogue - Stornoway Grey, Ivory Leather, Clear Glass

That’s an extremely good price. Be interesting to know exactly what they did as mine (@£3k) included new solenoids and oil pump.

Either way if it’s resulted in a fixed box for £1700 plus VAT that’s very good.

Hi Jon,

I'm not entirely sure on the full details but was sold to me as full recondition of existing gearbox inc TC. (using genuine ZF fluids)

As a friend had used them and driven many miles since with his being spot on I though worth driving up to them and using them.

Glad I did! 2009 Pre-facelift TDV8 Vogue - Stornoway Grey, Ivory Leather, Clear Glass

This is all amazing info and thank you all for taking the time to post it. I have spoken with Farriers at Kirby Muxloe who I use all the time and they are coming back to me with a budget quote. We’ll see! I think to be honest I want to leave it with them so they can actually diagnose what needs replacing rather than going full tilt and just stating ‘needs new transmission mate’.

The car had a warranty recall at approx 15k miles and had a replacement box then as well as solenoid valve (I approached Land Rover when I first got the car asking for a build spec and servicing/warranty history and they sent me all the info - I spoke to Dan at Duckworths for a quote for all the part numbers listed on the warranty detail as it didn’t actually state what was replaced - just listed the part codes for warranty replacements. Duckworths quote came to approx £18k for all warranty work in first 20k miles!)

Again to the collective - thanks for all your wisdom. I don’t know what I would do without this forum!! 2007 Range Rover Vogue 3.6 TDV8
