5W 40 Oil in a 4.4 TDV8

All,

With 150K miles just passed, anyone got any thoughts of using 5W 40 oil in the TDV8 4.4?

Anyone moved on up?

Seems D3/4 owners have in their V6’s

More important to use low sulphur C1 if you have a dpf.

Personally I stick to what manufacturers recommend

Can’t imagine a low sulphur 5w40 will hurt it if that is what you are topping up with
And probably best to change more often that official service interval. I aim to change every 8k or less.

I change the oil and filter every 5k’s or after a major trip. Gearbox, transfer box, diffs etc every year around MOT time, that’s the schedule I’ve used with my vehicles. Doesn’t hurt.

Don’t think it would hurt it either. Check out my YouTube channel

The difference is a D3 doesn't have a DPF

Using oil other than to the standard Land Rover specify, you do at your own risk, as the DPF is very sensitive.

This is what the workshop manual specifies:

5W-30 STJLR.03.5005 only for 4.4 TDV8 DPF vehicles.

Many of us 4.4 TDV8 owners on here perform an oil change every 5,000 ‐ 7,500 miles and alternate that with a full service, which should be enough. 2015 Range Rover Autobiography 4.4 SDV8

150k miles - it's just run in. Do not change viscosity. Thicker viscosity does not = better engine protection. The main way (as others have said) to prolong life is to change more regularly as the life limiting factor in diesel oil is soot load. 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)
