I have read a few posts on here relating to improving engine efficiency via premium diesel, fuel additives and 2 stroke oil. I was a little confused by the end of it!

My car has close to 143,000 on the click and has regularly been serviced from new by the same main dealer, it generally sounds fine on tick over to my untrained diesel ear.

However I would like to try something as a test to see if it can run a bit cleaner / and or more efficiently. For all I know it’s as good as it can get but would like to give something a go to improve it.

So my question is - is there anything I should avoid? I understand the opinions on additives in whatever form generally go from positive to ‘snake oil’, but there have been some positive reviews for the likes of BG44 etc.

Interested to hear any and all opinions on any of the above.

Tried a few on various cars inc (BG44 and 2 stroke) - never did anything apart from lighten my wallet . If I had a 3.6 the first thing I'd be doing is to blank and software delete the EGR valves before they go wrong. Plenty of reports of these engines running better after this and turbo's being spared death by egr parts ingestion. 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)

Interesting. Are there any know problems from deleting the EGR’s (guessing not by your note).

What should I expect a specialist to charge for it? ECU software needs changing too I presume?

When I was looking to buy an L322 a 3.6 was an option so I did some research on it ( Blanking plates from Ebay and software delete via the GAP IID tool) but best get advice from others who have actually done it as to what improvement it made and what the downsides are. 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)

I had a very noisy injection pump and put some Millers ecomax in the tank and the noise went away. Coincidence?

I regularly used BG44 in my 3.6, it did no harm but then again did it do any good? Geoff

speak to Empire in Colchester - one of the very best remap shops around for Range Rover ( and not far from you)

they can sort out the software re EGR and DPF, also give you good advice, and whilst there you could do a nice remap for your 3.6 lump - better fuel economy, more torque

What little I have read on EGR deletes included mentions of it being an mot failure if spotted. Not sure how true that is but read it a few times now. Also issues with the engine management light seem common. But I guess if done by a specialist garage these issues would have solutions, you would hope.

Blanked / missing EGR's are a MoT fail.
Be careful with additives, most manufacturers prohibit their use unless instructed by tech. support (Yes, I know a lot of dealers, JLR included, try and upsell them on services - 'oil flush' is also prohibited and potentially just as bad for your engine.) Additives can alter the burn temperature and contaminate DPF /CAT with substances that are irremovable.

Due to reduced Sulphur fuel not having the lubricating qualities the fuel system was originally designed for, I use Dipetane https://dipetane.com/ (Available from Amazon, the 5l bottles are more cost effective ) I can't honestly say if it's improved the mpg or emissions as my 3.6 had fuelling and emissions issues when I bought it... I've been double-dosing (1l to a full tank) as a restorative measure, after 600 miles, the car idles better, accelerates more smoothly and doesn't smoke as much on 'enthusiastic' acceleration. It's also just gone through an MoT with emissions of 0.19m1 which isn't too shabby for it's age and mileage (155k).

Yep, forgot to add the 'if modifications are visible' bit!
Some of those with 2.7TDV6's are feeling the pain of this as the missing pipes and blanks on top of the EGR's are visible (or not!) without removing any covers.

As my car has had a full dealer service history is it likely the EGR’s will have been done as a matter of routine maintenance at anytime? Or is it just when they go pop they are changed?

I have a 2 page pdf list of every time Stratstone Nottingham had the car but the lists are quite top line as to what was done. E.g. Service plus tyre plus mot etc.

I’m a bit green on it all as this is my first diesel car I have ever owned.
