Custom DIY Gen LR Illuminated Door Sill Treadplates

All the cool cars seem to be adding illuminated tread plates and the later Range Rovers are no different. What amazes me is the price for the official L322 door sills at around £500 for a pair. This is ridiculous when essentially they are just the old metal plates with some EL tape stuck to the underside with a small inverter to connect to the 12V lighting circuit. The other issue I have is that the L322 sill has very tiny wording compared to all the other versions, possibly as it was the first attempt by LR to do it. Now all their models have them.

I decided to custom make my own version that would be better than the aftermarket attempts and use LR parts.

I managed to buy a used pair of Evoque tread plates for £50 the pair, removed the inner metal logo panel and wiring and am in the process of fixing it to the top of the current treadplate with 3m tape, the easiest option is to place it over the thick silver tread rather than in the middle over the smaller silver ridges. I prefer to tape it so that I don't need to cut into the old plate, and it makes it easy to remove if needed.

I have taken a pic to show you what I have so far. The panel is just resting on the tread plate and will fit flush. It is from a 3 door evoque so is a bit longer than the current plate, however if I balance it each end it does not look out of place in my opinion. Apologies for not cleaning the footwells prior to the shot.

What do you guys think?

 Tom

Glad too see you guys think it looks ok.

I have not fixed it in place or wired it in but that should be fairly easy, I bench tested the lighting and it glows blue which is the same colour as the L322 plates, it is not really noticeable during the day but at night it is a clear glow.

I will provide a few more pics soon incase anyone else wants to do the same with some Evoque illuminated treads. Tom

If you can get a cheap set of the Evoque sills then to fit them takes some basic wiring skills and a strip or two of 3m tape.

So far this is what I have worked out:

1. Bend the pins holding the metal Range Rover strip to the plastic sill trim.
2. Unplug the earth cable from the trim.
3. Carefully prize the inverter from the base, you will need a soldering iron to disconnect the wires.
4. Remove the pins from the trim so that it will fit flush over the existing tread plates.
5. Connect extension wires to the inverter and trim so that they can be hidden away from the tread plate.
6. Connect the inverter to the live and earth supply from the footwell light on each side.
7. Test to see if it works.
8. Use 3M tape to fix in place and make sure it has clearance under the door trim. Tom

In the end I bought some genuine illuminated plates on clearance and wired them into the courtesy light in the footwell. I don't have pics of my original mod, but it looked ok. Tom

Thanks Tom.
