Fuel filter change problem

Just changed the fuel filter on TDV8 3.6 after dash warning of water in the fuel. The change was easy, but the engine will not run. It fired up and ran for 2 seconds and then died.

The approach I took was to disconnect all four of the quick-fit fuel pipes and to remove two M10 screws which secure the filter housing. I disconnected the plug for the bottom sensor and was able to remove the entire unit to the bench.

I thought this was a self-bleed system. What am I forgetting or doing wrong ?

Thanks

did the filter on our 4.4tdv8 a few weeks back
didnt disconnect everything but as long as you re-connected all pipes correct it should be a case of priming filter to do this all i did was turn ignition on for 20 secs, then off for 30 secs, then on for 20secs then started like normal and ran just fine
hope this helps

You need to bleed it using the Schrader valve under the engine cover - easier if you have someone to turn the ignition key on & off.

Ah. I saw that valve and wondered what it was. When I worked out that it was in the fuel system, I prodded it open with a small screwdriver and some air came out. I will work on that in daylight tomorrow. Many thanks.

Stuff plenty of rags around it or you'll smell warm diesel on the engine for weeks after....

The best way is with a hose off an old tyre inflator into a container, turn the ignition on until the LP pump shuts off, then off & on again - repeat until no more air bubbles come out.
With today's fuel prices, I'd be tipping it back in the tank too.

Quite a bit of air came out. It then fired up without hesitation. Brilliant. Many thanks.
