Rear Subframe Bush Replacement. BMW Bushes.

I will also post this on my project thread but thought I would put it in here as a reference.

My subframe bushes came up as an advisory on the MOT so I decided to change them. I ordered BMW ones as they are £75 a set rather than £80 each.

They are a little different in height and they also do not have the upper washer locator, you'll need to locate them manually.

This bushes look exactly the same when seated as the old ones did.

The following day after the vehicle has been sitting overnight I noticed the bushes have slipped downwards a bit leaving a gap at the bottom, I think this is for two reasons. One I greased the housing with silicone grease to get the bushes in and two, I haven't rivetted them in yet because I had to order 6mm rivets as i couldn't get them anywhere. I only have 4.8mm rivets here and they were not big enough.

I will jack the car back up and drill and rivet the new bushes as soon as they arrive. Christian.

I did this job on my old 3.6TDV8... I didn't rivet anything though... could you explain that a bit more as I'm curious ?

Thanks Gavin

As per the pics, the old bushes are actually rivetted to the subframe, I'm guessing this stops them slipping up and down. Perhaps it was a modification on later cars.

I greased my bushes to allow them to locate easier, however this may have been counter productive as the bushes have slipped downwards a bit. I'll know when the rivets arrive and I can get them relocated and rivetted. Christian.

Ah, missed that in the pic.

Yes, must be - my 2010 didn't have rivets. I used Meyle bushes.

Thanks. Gavin

I saw that post before actually, would be interested to see how the BMW bushes are fairing. Christian.

The subframe had settled a bit and this caused the bottom of the bush to expose itself outside of the housing thus:

Happened to all four. I didn’t rivet them in at the time because I didn’t have any 6mm rivets or the enormous rivet gun required to rivet them up.

I got the rivets and the gun today, pulled the bushes back in and then applied the rivets.

So far so good.

 Christian.

Which Rivet gun did you use, I have to do this job next and need to get one.

There doesn't seem to be a lot of space to get a gun in, how did you find it?

I got a Magnusson one from Screwfix, it looks like a pair of bolt croppers. Really difficult to get in there but manageable.

I took the car off road yesterday and the bushes have not moved a bit. the rivets seem to have done the trick. Christian.

Have you noticed any difference with the new bushes in place?

They looked like they were degrading where the rubber meets the centre aluminium sleeve. Also the MoT showed them as an advisory and I wanted a clean sweep so I changed them Christian.

I have changed my rear subframe bushes now, I used the Landrover bushes, (fronts are different to the rears) and I used the BMW X5 removal tool.

To be honest I found the job a lot easier than I expected, the only issue I had was when I pushed in the first bush the pushing plate got stuck to the bottom of the bush, the locating tube had got wedged inside the hole for the bolt, once I managed to remove it I reduced its width slightly and the rest all went in easily.

The car definitely feels more secure over the bumps now, I initially decided to change them because of the harsh ride over the small bumps and although this has improved it I still think it could be better. 2012 TDV8 Autobiography Baltic Blue
