Broadband problem - advice needed please *UPDATE*

I had BT Broadband installed last Monday (6th). I signed up for the 10Gb package, free for 4 months online. I'd done the maths, and it worked out slightly cheaper than what I was paying at the time with 02.

I was getting around 3Mb/s download speed on day one, which dropped over the coming days. I was told that this was normal and that it would take 10 days to stabilise, so I gave them the benefit of the doubt.

By Friday 10th, I'd allegedly used all of my allowance Shocked

I contacted BT to query this, as there's only my wife and I and we're at work all week, albeit at different times. She doesn't use the internet, so it's predominantly me. I was put through to a call centre abroad and was told that I had definately used 10Gb in 4 days. I questioned this, as there was no way I could have downloaded so much data on such a slow connection.

I called again today to see what they were going to do about it. The lady read out my usage, and said that I'd downloaded 3.6Gb on Friday 10th. This is impossible, as we were both at work on Friday and I couldn't connect to the Internet on Friday evening.
I've now been told that uploaded data counts towards the total - is this right?

I was put through to billing, who suggested I upgrade my package to unlimited, which will cost £36 a month Shocked Shocked

I've asked how I cancel it and they say I can't as there's no cooling off period.

Can anyone advise what I should do? 2010 MY Vogue SE TDV8 3.6 Stornoway Grey- fully loaded

Not exactly sure but i think the DSR rules would come into effect here even tho you ordered online and you then would be entitled to a 14 day cooling off period .

Try http://bt.custhelp.com/app/contact/c/2702 and insist on that you were Mis-Sold and Mis-lead on information that was given to you by one of their sales team

The upload and download counts towards your total data allowance on all ISP's im afraid Sad

I've been stuck in this boat before and you just need to quote DSR's to them and get out of the contract sharpish.

If your not sure how you have used so much data in a day you need to find out what the machines in your house are doing when you aren't in as unless you are downloading a lot of software/music/movies.... then i cant see how a normal connection would use up 3.6gb in a day and if a lot of it is upstream(upload) data then you must have some kind of download client open all the time and a machine powered on 24/7...

get to the root cause while getting rid of BT, they are useless at the best of times ISP wise Smile

If you have sky they have good deals for customers, or if you were happy with O2 and a customer with a mobile they do cheap deals too. All i can say is cheapest isn't always best. I try to advise people to stick to customer focused ISP's if they want to save on hassle. The money you pay out over the cheap ones is saved by not having the hassle of issues with them usually.

I was until last monday.

Thing is, BT reckon I used just over 3Gb on Friday 10th. Both of us were at work, the PC was powered down, and I've yet to connect the PS3 and the Wii to the new BT connection, so none of these machines are taking any data. The only other thing is my iPhone and iPad but both of these came with me to work last Friday.

The strange thing is, I can access BT FON and BT openzone hotspots- including the ones broadcast from my Home Hub. These are unlimited data and I can connect to these easily using my password. So why can't BT juet let me have unlimited data on my own plan? Confused. 2010 MY Vogue SE TDV8 3.6 Stornoway Grey- fully loaded

Yeah, BT are not the best when it comes to billing and plan metering. I've been with BT for years on their business unlimited plan and I only stick with it for the fixed IP address which no other provider will do any more it seems.

Suffice to say there are lots of better providers out there, O2 being among the top scoring in all the consumer surveys. But, if BT are saying you've used all that data whilst the kit was turned off, I'd ask them to prove it and then make a complaint to Oftel. Tends to get their attention does that.

I'd bet good money the meter they are looking at is for a different line. It has been known before Wink

There are a few that offer static IP's for non business circuits but they aren't cheap ....

How well secured is your wireless point?

3.6GB sounds about right for a who TV series on Divx.

Maybe worth seeing of your Access Point has decent logging - maybe see which MAC addresses were registered.

BE won't provide from the exchange I'm on. Us poor cousin rural peeps are stuck with BT and really slow speeds.

No infinity, no G2 ADSL, and rarely above 1 meg. Some are still on dial up. Talk about 3rd world comms. Shocking really.

BT Business 2 meg (which rarely gets above 1 meg) with fixed IP and unlimited usage costs £30 plus VAT a month. Thieving sods.

Having said that, it's about the ONLY downside of living in the countryside. I hate city life and even smallish towns & estates etc drive me potty. Guess I'm just an unsociable old fart then.

Don't be so hard on yourself! When BT announced their new Infinity fibre optic service, my exchange was going to be in the first lot that were done, but sadly it appears that despite this, every time I punch in my postcode, I'm told my house is "too far" from the exchange to get it, so all I get is a miserable 3-4Mb/s if I'm lucky! Got - 2017 SDV8 Autobiography in Loire Blue

It sounds like someone may have logged into your wifi.

As for BT - I too think the 'you can't get out of your contract' stuff is rubbish for a new contract of pretty much anything. Researching my first Range Rover purchase
