Oil leak 2011 4.4 TDV8.. not oil cooler

Hi All,

I have a worsening oil leak on my 2011, 105000mile 4.4TDV8. Started off as the odd spot on the drive a couple of months ago now a much large "patch".

This morning I took the pollen filter off expecting/hoping to find the oil cooler caked in oil, but the cooler and pipes seem completely dry.

Further investigation seems to suggest that the leak is somewhere near the front of the engine on the RHS (drivers side UK). Looking down through the engine, I can see that there is oil on the drive shaft boot, and also on the top of the last steering column joint before the steering rack (as far as I can see with a torch). I havent yet been able to get under the car, but the worsening oil patch on the drive would indicate it is somewhere near the driveshafts, but obviously I could be being folled by the undertray. I am currently losing approx 500ml of oil every 200miles or so. Very slight smell of hot/burning oil occasionally (outside the car), but I think the leak is below the exhausts.

Any ideas of where to look further? Is everything at this level beyond DIY?

Thanks in advance...

Could be a few things. Oil pump plug sometimes leak or it could be turbo in that area Big Cry
My advice would be to get it to a specialist for a proper look-see on a ramp with engine sump guard off etc.
I only ever use Glenrands now. They do a delivery/collection service or a loan car. Speak to Ross and tell him I sent you. www.glenrands.co.uk Gone to a good home: 2011 4.4 TDV8 Vogue SE Buckingham Blue with Ivory and clear glass = "Rory"

So apparently, it's leaking from an oil scavenge pipe at the back of the engine. One of those "we've never seen one leak from there before" problems! If I'm lucky, it can be fixed in situ for around 800 .. but if I'm unlucky it's an engine out job!

Great service and comms from the guys at Glenrands so far though. I will be using them again.

Got it back on Friday.

They managed to do it with then engine in, but they also found a small split in teh turbo oil hose, so fixed that aswell. Total bill came to just over £900. As I had mentally budgetted for £2k, I treated it to some new tyres on Friday too. I guess I'm comitted to keeping t for at least another year now!

Just need to get the residual olil off the block paving, and I can forget about oil leaks now hopefully

Glenrands did a great job on this, and I would thoroughly recommend then to anybody in the Surrey /Hampshire area. Thanks Dr. Rob for the initial recommendation!

Think that’s what they left the factory with, unless another choice was made. I went with those when I replaced mine.

Hopefully getting it back how you like it now.

I am committed to it now having spent the best part of £1800 at the weekend. So I will be looking to do some cosmetic work (seats), and also fix the DAB (no reception) in the next few months. Then I will be happy !
