United Kingdom 2007 Range Rover Supercharged 4.2 SC V8 Stornoway Grey
2008 4.2 SC Gearbox service/sump

Hi all,

So I've had my gearbox flushed last year by Bodsy, though it a good idea to change the sump and filter too, so on the recommendation of my LR indy I bought the metal sump kit off eBay, I think it was the Britpart one or at least supplied by them.

I changed the sump for the metal one, it was while I was doing that my LR indy mate mentioned that sometimes the supplied bolts are too long and to use washers under them, at that point I wish I'd chucked the lot in the bin and bought genuine ZF again (the plastic type)

But I didn't, I carried on and used the washers under the bolt heads, all was fine for a while then it started weeping, and has done on and off for a year now, I keep tightening the bolts and checking the level, it stops weeping for a short time, then starts again, so am guessing the gasket is leaking.

I am mechanically competent and have followed the torque sequence and settings.

So, I'm going to do it all again using a genuine ZF sump.

I did the mechatronic seal (using genuine ZF part) so won't be doing that again.

I just wanted to double check myself really, it is a ZF 6HP26 gearbox isn't it?

Has anyone else encountered this problem of the leaking when a metal sump is used?

This is the kit I'll be using this time, am sure this is right but just wanted to double check Very Happy

Yes, the L322 4.2 V8 Supercharged uses the 6HP26X transmission. 1068 298 062 is the genuine ZF kit which includes the correct sump pan (0501 216 243) manufactured by IBS Filtran in Germany.

The metal sump pan with the separate filter makes sense for a Discovery or Sport transmission because of access issues caused by the crossmember. It makes less sense on an L322, where access is straightforward, though you may have other reasons for wanting a steel pan?

Excellent, thank you Phil, very much appreciated.

The only reason I fitted the metal sump in the first place was because the LR Indy pointed me in that direction, I very much wish I hadn't.

I shall get that ordered and get my lovely RR back to a non leaky state! 2008 L322 4.2 V8 SC Stornoway Grey
