Tailgate will not close

Has anyone experienced a tailgate that will not fully close? I went away for a weekend with an excitable dog that would jump out of the boot before the tailgate closed. The only way around this was to hold the dog in the car with one hand whilst manually closing the tailgate with the other. Now every time I use the tailgate button to close the tailgate it only part closes before stopping and beeping at me. It’s like the proximity sensor is detecting something that isn’t there. Has anyone else had this problem or can suggest ways to fix it.

Hi,

Not sure if this will help or not but it might be worth resetting the tailgate to it full height (opening) again as perhaps you confused it a little with closing it manually to stop the dog from getting out Very Happy

I wasn't aware you could do this until it was pointed out to me by someone else - but you can 'limit' how high it opens but putting it a the height you want and then pressing and holding the close button for 3 seconds - a chime sounds - and then it only opens to that height - great for smaller people or where opening it in a low garage will damage the tailgate !!

To reset to fully open simply open the tailgate (only) and put the tailgate at full height and press the close button for 3 seconds - Chime will sound etc.

Might not work - but it's a little-known feature that is often overlooked - might be worth a try perhaps?

Good luck ! L405 4.4 V8 Vogue SE Santorini Black

I had this problem a few weeks ago and it was an easy fix. Look at the plastic trim on either side of the bottom tailgate and see if one has become unclipped. Mine had so I popped it back in and hey presto - the tailgate closed as it should. Kev

Great shout, as it only happens when both parts of the tailgate are open. If I am only using the upper tailgate it closes as it should

Yes, that was exactly the same as me. There are sensors on the edges of the plastic trim. When they are out of sync as a result of one of them not being clipped on properly, it'll cause the exact issue you describe. Kev
