TD6 GEARBOX WOES

Well after owning the car a short while and covering 1000 miles only the Gearbox has become very unwell !!!!
Thankfully the gearbox was only fitted in Jan 2022 so is under warranty. This however does not instill confidence in the next recon gearbox.
In the hands of the gods i suppose !!!!

It would appear that the internals of the GM gearbox fitted to the TD6 are made of cheese.

They seem to have a normal service life of around 70k - mine had a rebuilt box around that time & it has recently gone bang at just under 150k, so I'm awaiting the funds to get it done.

Lucky yours is still under warranty - sadly, you often see them on eBay/Gumtree effectively written off due to gearbox failure.

Good luck with having yours sorted.

When I bought my TD6 8 years ago, the bloke that was selling it did say that he thought the gearbox was on its way out.
I factored that in the price I was willing to pay for the vehicle.
About a month later I got the gearbox reconditioned with upgraded parts and its still going strong 140000 k,s later.
The main thing that the shop said was to drop the oil and replace every 20thou k,s.
I have done this and my gearbox is running beautifully still.
Hope you get it sorted.

cheers

The aluminium used in the valve body is softer than normal. This is why they tend to not last long. Sonax used to do a kit where you could sleeve the main failure points, but as the cars get cheaper and cheaper, it makes less sense to spend quite a bit on the gearbox unfortunately.
