Front differential fluid change

Gents,

I have a question about the front differential, and the due service and fluid change. I've been unable to find any info on what is the recommended servicing interval, not in the owner's handbook, nor anywhere else.

Car is 6yo at 107000km and rear diff and transfer box fluids have already been changed twice. Dealer tells me not to worry about front diff yet, as it is used less and servicing interval is bigger, but it is probably coming up soon.

I also want to change gearbox oil with it, probably at 120k, even though that interval is probably even bigger ~160000km/100k miles.

Please share your opinion, thank you!

New Oil is cheaper than a new diff or gbox

But you knew that anyway. Cool

Mine had its differential oil changed at four years/40,000 miles at my request. I was told that LR recommended it be done at six years, presumably about 60,000 miles (100,000km). It will partly depend on use when it is necessary. I have not had the gear box oil changed yet, but there will be threads on here about when it is thought wise to do it, I think maybe six years/60,000 miles. Maybe a search on the Getrag website would be useful too. Only Range Rovers since 1988

Obviously this is only my personal preference, I would change the oil in both diff's at the same time, usually earlier than recommended. Same with for the gearbox, do it earlier than quoted in the schedule.

What I do not understand is the comment in the OP, quote 'Dealer tells me not to worry about front diff yet, as it is used less'
Seems to be a strange comment to make, I realise that the forces on the two diffs may be different at times, but the front diff is part of the drive train and running continuously.

Yes, I wondered too. Probably because it has the active locking diff on the rear axle, as opposed to the normal one, and it is under heavier load, but I am only guessing.

I fully intend on changing the front diff oil soon, as it makes no sense to me to wait that long. I just found it weird the rear and trasnfer box have been changed at 40 and 80k already, but not the front. Couldn't find info about front diff intervals anywhere.

There was no suggestion from the dealer that there was a difference between the differentials from a perspective of when to change the oil. Only Range Rovers since 1988

The open diffs actually have a service interval of 160k miles or 10 years with the locking diffs at 80k or 6 years.

Transfer box fluid is the same at 80k or 6 years.

Have a look in the wiki at the servicing sheets.

I always like to get mine changed well ahead of schedule though. I did all of mine including gearbox at about 65k. Kev
