TDV8 starting woes

Dont buy a FFRR they said, it'll be a nightmare they said.

So I bought one anyway - 2010 TDV8 in bronze, with 100k miles.

That was a year ago, and since then I've covered a massive 4k miles hehe and all I've had to do is put a new battery in, as the previous one failed whenever it was cold. Other than that nothing but checking the fluids every now and then and putting diesel in, lots of diesel. Mostly its short journeys around town, but still been faultless.

Until now.

Last week I pulled out onto the road and accelerated harder than normal up the hill, and noticed a lot of smoke out the back, thought this was just cold-start over-fuelling as it was cold that day, and it hasn't happened before or since.

Then on Tuesday I pulled out and accelerated, not even that hard to be honest, and within seconds noticed a lack of engine noise - no warning lights until after a few hundred yards when I got a "Restricted Performance" message, and the car basically rolled to a stop about 0.5 miles from home. It started again, but very rough with an idle speed of about 3-400 rpm, then it stopped. Tried again, same thing, engine caught, rough idle, stopped.

Got it recovered home by the AA, and now it wont even start - it turns over, but wont catch.

Basic OBD check isn't showing any codes.

Any ideas where I should start checking - battery is fine, there's 1/4 tank of diesel in it.

I'd have to say no idea.
Would an old filter cause this kind of problem, if so its probably an easy thing to change out just to eliminate it.

Error that came back was MAF sensor short circuit, so off to the shops for a pair of MAFS.

Apparently these are like BMs - any MAF fault and the ECU stops the engine from running at all.

Well that hasn't worked.

Two new MAFS, no error with ignition on, but a MAF error on Bank B as soon as you try and start the car. Basic circuit check shows +12V and +5v coming through OK. Bank B is 3 wire, (furthest from from front of car), Bank A is 4 wire.

Totally stumped

Whereabouts in the Midlands are you? I'm on the Leicestershire/Warwickshire border about 5 miles south of J10 on the M42.

If you're fairly nearby I could pop over with my GAP IID and see what that comes up with.

Dunc. The life you have is the only one you'll get; make the most of it.

Thanks for the offer. I'm in Walsall, so not far away at all.

All checking has been done with an Autel MaxiCom.

Next step is getting it towed/trailered somewhere, but everyone I've called so far is rammed full to early Feb.

Turbos - the shop have said the intercooler is full of oil and at least Bank B turbo is shot, which would explain the way it was "almost" starting, but with a MAF imbalance.

Another 6 week wait til they can do anything with it though. <sigh>
