Strange Gearbox Fault

Hi everyone, a good friend recommended this forum and hopefully you can help.
My 2003 L322 has developed a strange fault with the gearbox/gear selector.
From cold the gearbox engages drive fine and the D light comes on. After a few seconds of driving the D light disappears and the the gearbox will not change up to the next gear.. The very slightest pressure on the gear selector resolves the problem and the D light comes back on and all is well. And then the same happens again and again. It only takes the slightest movement of the gear selector forward or backwards to resolve the problem.
Hopefully someone out there has had a similar issue and can offer some advice.
Thanks in advance
Mike

Welcome to the forum Trumpeter.

Is your L322 a 3.0 TD6 diesel or a 4.4 V8 petrol? (they use different transmissions)

I would first check the selector cable adjustment i.e. slacken off the clamp bolt, select Park at the gear lever and Park on the selector lever detent, then retighten the clamp bolt.

If that doesn’t fix it, and assuming you have the petrol model with the ZF 5HP24 transmission, your inhibitor switch is probably playing up. You can either remove the rivets and give it a clean inside, or get a replacement.

Thanks Phil, yes it’s a petrol.
Many thanks for replying and your advice.
