TDV8 4.4 timing chain rattle?

I picked my 2012 Westie up from the garage after having a coolant leak repaired and they drew my attention to a intermittent rattle when the car was running coming from the front of the engine. 'Likely cause are chain guides starting to go'.

That of course prompted the 'lets get rid of the car and buy a newer one thought', but I thought I'd do a bit of internet research into TDV8 timing chain problems...just to find not a lot of info, so I thought I'd ask on here.

Has anyone on here had problems with chain guides, rough cost to repair, why would it happen, what happens if I drive the car and the guide collapses? Does the engine blow up?

The fact that there is so little info on the web also makes me a bit suspicious. Car has 96k miles on it so expect things to go wrong, but this sounds like potentially a very expensive repair.

I’d get a second opinion on that one as they could be talking rubbish. Not saying they never give problems but I’ve never seen one that has on the TDV8
What does make an intermittent noise form the front (right side ) as you look at the engine is the high pressure fuel pump, this is Normal and nothing to worry about, just lean your head in the engine bay towards the right side looking from the front while running, if the noise comes and goes it’s probably the pump, it has to deliver something like 25,000 PSI so can make a rattling sound while doing it, and it’s driven by the timing chain.
Mines always done it. Thumbs Up

Haven’t heard anyone needing a timing chain replacement on the 4.4 TDV8.
6 hour job at an Indy if you wanted to do it for peace of mind

I am getting a similar feeling for my 4.4. I've just posted a thread on the noise if you want to have a read and see if it's similar to yours?

Try using some good quality injection cleaner. My fuel pump was occasionally very noisy but after two treatments I have not heard the noise since.

I heard mine occasionally make a rattle for a second or so. Very similar to chain rattle.
Sounded like fuel pump area.
I’ve heard other 4.4 do it so haven’t been worried.

I've never heard of any timing chain issues on a TDV8... Not to say it can't happen but it's probably worth asking a main agents master tech to take a listen... Thumbs Up

Thanks all for your input.

BenRK - very similar to your noise, but not as loud. I can only hear it with bonnet open and with my head near engine.

I'll give the injection cleaner a go as it's not going to do any harm anyway.

And monitor to see if it gets worse.

When the drive belt is cold it can definitely be heard much more than after a 5 mile+ running temperature .
