Handbrake MOT Failure

It seems there are right and wrong ways for testing the RR handbrake ('11 TDV8) during an MOT test.

Assuming the tester used the correct method, how do I tell whether the brake shoes need replacing or just adjusting?

Thanks.

Stop on a steep hill. Shift into neutral and apply parking brake. If the car holds then parking brake is fine.

If you are worried about your handbrake operation it would be worth taking off the rear drum/ discs and cleaning out all the crud that collects in there. The crud tends to act as lubrication between the shoes and the drum greatly reducing the handbrakes efficiency. While you are in there it is also worth emery papering the surface of the shoes to remove any glazing. Thumbs Up
Then as above try it out on a decent hill.

I'm not worried about the operation, I just need it to work long enough to pass the MOT. Or at least have the MOT place assure me they tested it the correct way.
