Tools to make life easier when working on the FF…

Today I have been removing the fan and cowling in preparation of replacing my belt, pulleys, alternator, water pump and ac compressor.
As many will know it’s a PITA job involving access to some bolts, screws and clips which must have been installed with the engine out of the car!!!

There was one tool I had which I don’t see how I would have removed some of those items with out it! I know it’s probably not the best type of tool for the job, but was the best I had to hand.

I inserted a socket attachment from my drill set and it worked perfectly.

This leaves me to wonder… what other tools are there that we shouldn’t be without? I don’t mean the more common items like you have in the standard Halfords kits…

The other “must have” for me is the excellent Proxxon rotary ratchet…

So what else? Currently driving: 2012 L322 SE Overfinch 4.4 tdv8

magnetic pick up tool and also claw end pick up tool. for when the socket falls off the extension, or the nuts, or the plastic clip etc..but doesn't fall through to the floor! led head torch, cheap rubber builders gloves from screw fix.

The magnetic grabber is a good one… I don’t have one and have been fortunate to not need it. But can see it’s usefulness so will add one to my arsenal of tools!

As for the head torch, I think it’s great but was in two minds if it should be added. I decided not to as I found it frustrating when working in confined spaces as it caused shadows due to it being far enough from your eyes. I kept reverting to my magnetic lamp.

So while useful, for me I wouldn’t miss it if I didn’t have it. Currently driving: 2012 L322 SE Overfinch 4.4 tdv8

This is what I have…

It’s really bright, seemingly good battery life, and only £15 on Amazon! Currently driving: 2012 L322 SE Overfinch 4.4 tdv8

The magnetic tool is a life saver. I use mine next to that nut or bolt that you can't get both hands on so if it drops out your fingers or socket it catches the nut or bolt from dropping never to be seen again. It's very useful recovering something that's dropped down into the bottom engine cover. I once dropped just one bolt and retrieved 2 more along with a small spanner.

I wouldn’t be without my trusty Milwaukee compact impact wrench. So small, so powerful, and has not let me down yet to undo anything.

Oh that looks interesting. I must resist, too many impact sockets as it is 🤣

To be honest I rarely use it on wheels. I torque them normally so they come off normally as well. Expect for that first time when I buy a car that someone else owned. Just like with the calliper bolts. It’s like very few use a torque wrench and just go for as tight as possible 🤣

Seriously though folks I have the following Laser tools and have used the 5978 for the upper bushes, still have the lower ones to do:-

I know its cheaper to use sockets studding and washers etc but didnt want all the faffing about finding ones that fitted

just got a pair of rear upper bushes through the post, so got that job at the weekend... I bought a cheaper set of removal tools, on their way, but handle the 45mm upper bush, at just £24 set.

edit, I can confirm, the this set is perfect set for doing upper rear bushes, at 45mm diameter. I did mine at weekend, and each one took about 15mins. no other special tools needed.

I only use my impact driver on wheels as I’m lazy! I zip round to take them off… and on my guns lowest setting to put them back. It still needs a few turns of the torque wrench to get them to the right tightness. Like many, I’ve been stuck on the side of a road with a puncture fighting with over tightened wheel nuts!

In my younger days I put in a wheel nut with a gun and mis-threaded it. Luckily an experienced mechanic had the tools and know how to remove and re-thread the hole. As a result I am extra careful putting them in and tightening. Currently driving: 2012 L322 SE Overfinch 4.4 tdv8
